F4i missing
Well, it's a long story so I'll just give you cliff notes:
1.Went riding today
2. About 20 minutes into it, my FI light comes on, but the bike seems to be running fine and I'm almost exactly halfway to where I'm going so I decide to ride it on in.
3. The only time the bike shows signs of trouble is if the rpms drop down to about 3k. If they get that low, say when I'm slowing down to pull into a place, the bike will sputter once or twice, kind of like it's missing or backfiring.
So, WTF is up?

ya, has anything been changed or worked on with the bike? any accidents or it laying down?
i know the fuel pressure regulators are prone to go out on these bikes and they cause rough idle. they are about 20$ from a dealer.
if you change it and it's not hte problem then oh well. also, how many miles on the bike? check all the spark plugs and see if they are in good condition. if they are pretty worn then the bike won't burn fuel properly.
also, might try some fuel injector cleaner. odd that it happened all of a sudden, but sometimes fuel injectors can get clogged up.
check any wire connections too.
oh ya, put the bike in diagnostic mode and see what that FI light is. duh, i forgot about that. There is a plug that isn't plugged into anything and it has 2 wires on it. jump those wires together with another piece of wire then turn the ignition on with the kill switch on. it should blink the FI light a certain number of times. fast blink is equal to 1, and long blink is equal to 10. so if you get 3 fast blinks it's code 3. bring that back here and post it.

Re: F4i missing
I recently had the countershaft seal replaced, so the motor has been pulled and reinstalled recently. Actually, this was the first real time I was getting to ride it since getting it back (crazy *** weather). I don't know how long it's been since the spark plugs were changed. I'll check the diagnostic after I get out of class.

ya, FI light is fuel injection light. it's also the code like for problems.
if hte bike has sat for any number of time then you need to drain all the gas and put fresh in. you probably need new plugs if you ran bad gas through the motor too.
spark plugs won't show up in the codes, that's just something you have to change. you might try some fuel injector cleaner too...when they sit for a long period they gum up pretty bad.

Why do you think the FI light is stay on? It doesn't come on unless I ride for about 20+ minutes. Do you think it might have something to do with my speedometer not being hooked up?

no, it doesn't need the gauges. it will stay on if it throw's a code until that is reset and the problem is fixed.

Re: F4i missing
Well, I checked the service manual and, like KJ said, it told me it was a loose/bad connection at the speed sensor, which makes sense since my speedomoter reads 0 no matter what. I guess the plug got overlooked or wasn't connected well, either way I can take care of it over the weekend. What I don't understand is how a loose speed sensor would cause my bike to backfire when I'm engine braking at low rpms...
