98 gsxr 600 gas tank help

so there i was sitting in my garage and low and behold i smelt gasoline BAD, so i look under my bike and see a big *** puddle of gas, i look all around and i see that the leak is comming from my tank, so i pulled my tank and see that the leak is all around the fuel pump, i pulled the pump and look at the gasket real good, and it looks fine, but maybe a little old, to my knowledge the pump has never been off the tank, unless it was removed before i bought it, maybe when the guy before me painted it up, so my question is this:

has anyone ever had this problem, i have tried to put it back on and tighten it a little tighter, but no success, it still leaks a little, but enough to cause a drip once every 5-7 min, so i dont know if the gasket is bad or what, one thing i have noticed is the screws around the fuel pump, get tight, but not tight enough, they will turn a little more and more................does anyone happen to know what the torque is for those bolts, they should be the same as all fuel pump bolts, ie f4i , gsxr 750 ,ect, ect.
any help would be appriciated

can you use a few washers to tighten it up. or something along those lines

if all else fails go get a tube of silicon and fix it the right way

standy is a decent person
you need to replace the gasket and the bolts. The torque spec is around 2 foot pounds......DON'T OVER-TIGHTEN THEM!!!!! You will distort the fuel tank and mess up your life .

i already ordered a brand new gasket and 8 new bolts, i noticed that the last eight bolts strippen themselves, i must have tightened them a little much but the gas tank looks fine, on all eight screws the first 3-4 threads are all shiney, not dull like the rest of the screw, and they have no bite to them, so hopefully i did not mess the tank up, and the new screws/gasket will do the trick, but heres a question............

is there a specific type of silicone, i should put on that gasket and tank before i reinstall them, like specific brand???

thanh you for your help!!

That gasket was recalled, that's why it leaks. The dealer should have told you that and hooked you up. The local dealer out here failed to tell me too and I had to buy the gasket for $36. The new bolts are a tad longer to prevent over tightening (they bottom out). You have to tighten them in a specific order too (like putting on lug nuts on your car). I had the same problem with the gas leak but had no problems with the new bolts. If you use a sealant be sure it is approved for GASOLINE. There is one on the market that is actually aircraft grade, I wish i could help you out with the name of it.
