gsxr 1000 oil change question

I'm doing an oil change on my 02' GSX-r1000 for the first time. Can somebody please tell me how to do it, and how much and what kind of oil it takes. The dealer wants $70.00 to do it, and i think that is a little excessive as it only costs $20.00 to have one on my truck.

I think the drain plug is on the bottom, do I have to remove the farings? And where do I fill it and check the level at.

You know whats funny. I have been a tech for auto my whole life, and am very mechanically inclined, but now I feel like such an idiot asking how to change oil.

And help would be greatly appreciated.

first off... motorcycles aren't trucks. Parts and labor are both more expensive.
For a noob, easiest way is to remove the right side fairing to get to fill cap. Filter is on the front of the engine in between the headers, takes some manuevering to get it out sometimes. Drain plug is at the bottom most part of the engine, sitting in the middle of the pipes so that you can get at it. 3.5 (close to factory spec)-4 quarts (depending on what you personally want) of oil. Suzuki OEM 16510-03G00-X07 filter or Fram if you really wanna impress the ladies. You should be able to figure out the rest.

Re: gsxr 1000 oil change question

I work at a dealership... a decent price is $60. Figure:

Filter $12-15 (OEM) or Fram for $7-8
Oil $8-10 for garbage oil $25 for decent stuff
labor for 0.5 Hr @ $60-70/hr

So that's anywhere from $45-70 depending on the dealership.

Re: gsxr 1000 oil change question

heres a hint since the filters in a shitty place to get to and its hard to turn being in the spot its in you can take a long screw driver and hammer it a little ways into the filter and turn it then it'll come off easy by hand..and drain the oil first
