Post A little help with da Gixer (steering)

Hey I picked up 93 Gixer that was sitting for a while(only 9000 orig miles. The steering seems to tight at slow speeds. It is all orignal and very clean. I have removed the steerring dampener to check that out and it seems fine. The main complaint is when I am slowing down or operating at a slow speed the bike is hard to control. any one else have this complaint about an old school GSXR
Thanks in advance

well i can tell you the first thing you want to do is put the dampner back on....as far as the steering goes there is a bearing set in the caseing just above the forks....get you some stuff called pb blaster...its a magnetic de ruster and loosener if you put some of that in there and still have a problem then just get a new set of bearings they are like 45 bucks and takes bout 3 hours to change....but the pb blaster should take care of it

try checkin tire pressure too. Steering will feel tight at slower speeds if low.

Thanks for the info and yea I put the dampner right back on and the tire preasure is cool. Is there grease on those bearings or are they sealed?

I had a similar problem on my 91 GSXR 750. I ended up changing the steering head bearings (upper and lower) and that completely resolved the handling issues!

The steering stem nut may be too tight or the bearing just need to be greased, (they are not sealed). When you tear down the front end notice how much easier it moves without the tire an fender and stuff keep this in mind when you tighten everything back up, follow the Mfg. torque specks, you local dealer should be willing to provide them to you

Hey just a quick update...im back on the road!! the bearings were just a litle dry. Removed the top yoke nut, removed the bolts that line up the grips to the top mount, removed dash cluster, losened the clamp bolts holding the top mount on to the forks and removed the assembly. Washed down the bearings with wd 40 to clean'em out and packed'em with grease reassembled and hit the road... you guys would not beleive the difference... oh yea and polished the **** out of any part I removed

Thanks for all the help

Peace
