Attaching 12 bar

I designed a 12 bar for my 954, built it with the rear plastics off and now its time to put them back on, should I cut out for the bar first then adapt the tailight however possible or remove the bar replace the plastics and try and cut out and "fish" the bar back in place???? open to suggestions

install bar, then make plastics work, the less you cut them the better!

Re: Attaching 12 bar

if its a stocker, SAWSALL

if you like a clean look, then after sawsall shorten the inner baffle and reattach the end cap with rivets!

Re: Attaching 12 bar

if its minty i would take it off and find a stocker to cut down and beat on.

If its already trashed, then cut it down just a little, only take off as much as you HAVE too, those things get annoyingly loud quick. Take your time, take it apart, there is a allen key inside the exhaust tip, cut it down, re-assemble it.

Re: Attaching 12 bar

hey, I have the flat bar sticking out of the plastics but left them long I just have to cut them back andweld the skid plate on for the 12 bar. How is the best way to determine how to set it, should i level up from the rear tire and make it even with that or start by cutting them a little long, standing the bike on end and trimming them till I get the bike perfectly vertical??

Re: Attaching 12 bar

stand bike up, see how close to vert. you are

determine how much you need to trim. Put bike back down and trim correct amount, leaving an angle (the top of the bar will be longer than the bottome of the bar)

set bike back up at 12 ON the bar that you are going to weld to it. Place two decently think washers under the LEADING edge (the edge that will be forward when scraping) under the bar. Weld bar in place. The reason for the washers is so that the trailing edge scrapes first, which will slide better than the leading edge which will tend to grab and turn you and breaks subframes easier. It will eventualy wear in and the whole bar will scrape! Good luck

Re: Attaching 12 bar

Thanks Beat I got everything set up today with the bike vert and did all the trimming, called webb to make sure i was setting the bar right, cut all the pieces so the top edge will scape first, i have 1/2" thick steel for a skid plate with about a 1/4"gap between bottom edge and ground bike was set with a level across the front and back tire, the front tire is about 1/2" forward from the back, pulled down on the bars backward and pushed forward to make sure my weight placement was good , hoping to try it sunday if the weather clears up, post where you guys are riding sunday, thanks again, any suggestions on gearing for a 954 dont want to go to crazy maybe 1or 2 down in the front 5 up in the back, hoping to use my stock chain

Re: Attaching 12 bar

if you keep the numbers close, like -2+3 or -3+4 then you should be able to use the stock chain. We'll be riding sunday all day, Powers and some of his boyz are headed down. Call one of us and we'll let you know where.
