I like to keep mine for years then roll it. Last time Camille and I spent a week rolling and the total came to $1400

Yup mine does 4% also. Remember never to max out your 401k early in the year if your company matches. Then you lose out on matching for the rest of the year.

The 6% match at 135% is very sweet. The beer is just icing on the cake. Make sure you act on it now.

Right now I contribute 12% to mine. The Raytheon stock is definitely boosting my overall portfolio performance. Interestingly enough, I'm seeing great returns on this International fund that I have as well.

I thought $13,000 was the max per year.... not 12%.

Yup, international funds are awesome right now. Why do you think steal and lumber cost so much? China is going through major growth and plus Iraq.

Yes you are right but depending on what you make $13,000 and 12% could mean the same thing.

The max is based on what your company contributes as a whole. Ours is 9000/yr. Our max percentage is 60% but once you hit the 9g's it goes to after tax and i believe you lose the match.

Sorry man but you are wrong on that one. Max is max which is set by the goverment which is $3k. Does not matter if you or your company pays for your 401k but the max for any year is still 3k

My perked up friend meant to say $13k, which is the maximum amount set by the government for 2004. (It will jump to $14k in 2005).
If you contribute more than the maximum, that amount (plus any income earned on that amount) will be taxable income to you both when you put it into the plan AND when you withdraw it! Ouch!

Here's a question: I heard someplace that you can make a withdrawal (read: not loan) from your 401k tax free for a 1st time home purchase. Is that true?

I'm pretty sure it's just a loan for first time home purchase and you have to pay it back into the account. The good thing is you're paying back the interest to yourself, but if the market is doing good it could work against you.

Re: Are you thinking about Retirement? Pension Plan, 401k, Roth IRA ???

Right now we get shut off at 9K. I was told by our financial lady here that if more people contributed then we could give more. I'll have to ask her to explain that one to me again. Maybe it's because we make so much less money up here that people don't give enough on average to let us give 13K. Down there pay is much higher so you wouldn't have that problem? Your 6% is a lot more than my 6%.
