I need Headlight wiring aid...

I got my coil wound and all ready to go. Ran all the wiring, the light works great until I attach it to the bike and it grounds itself out.

What the hell?

How is this thing supposed to be wired. Currently I have two wires coming from the alternator, one goes directly to the light, the other goes to a regulator and then to the light.

I did it like this, but no go. Where is it supposed to be grounded? How is the regulator supposed to be wired in? The reg only has two wires coming out of it.

Help!!!!

I got the idea from this.

Re: I need Headlight wiring aid...

one side of the light should go to the frame. then from the other side of the light, go to the yellow on the regulator. also on that yellow should be the power from the stator. the brown on the regulator goes to ground also.

Fab, how much am I looking at to get my bike set up for lights? I will pick up the lights myself and make the mounts for them. Just interested in the hardware to power them and I don't want to wind anything myself.

Now that sounds ok. What is the turn around time on the job?

After I get that back on the bike I just have to connect the wiring you have put on it to the lights I have chosen, correct?

Never done this before so I am a newbie on this mod.

ok what exactly did you messup/have backwards?

and your sketch was wrong well in a sense, if the blue paint line is power and the black is ground, you have the regulator and the switch on the wrong side of the circuit, regulator and switch should be on the power side. UNLESS i ASSUME THE STATOR GROUNDS ITSELF OUT VIA THE BOLTS TO THE ENGINE CASE, THEN EITHER SIDE OF THE NEW WINDS WOULD DO GREAT. But what do I know I couldn't get my light working lastnight and had to call Fab5 to lend a helping brain cell or 2. But I'll get it when I get to my buddies house tonight, and we'll be rocking.

we hooked it upto a car battery just to see what terminals are hi/lo, and that fawker is bright, it is supposed to be 35hi/35lo it's the Acerbis DHH black, but I am wiring it so the high and low is on at the same time, adds more flood to the beam. it's bright as ****.

will have pics as soon as I get it done, and we go for a ride.

peace

Re: I need Headlight wiring aid...

You should only have one wire for the light coming out of the stator. When Honda made the new style stator they left tabs for you to solder the winding to. They did this so you do not have to have two wires coming out of the stator for lights. This tab is grounded to the frame. I have wound three fiddies and have had no problems yet.

Re: I need Headlight wiring aid...

The sketch is wrong because if you ever plan on hooking the light to your bike (which is inevitable) the light is gonna ground itself out. There is no ground in the loop, the one in the picture. There is in fact no need for two wires to come out of the stator.

Only one wire needs to come out, and it needs to split off. One side to the regulator which then goes to a ground, and the other side goes to the headlight.

If you wire in a switch, make sure it is before the split to the headlight/regulator.

Re: I need Headlight wiring aid...

OK where did you guys get your magnet wire from? Just got back from radio shack. They dont have 18 guage. they only had 22g and only these little dinky *** roll of it. (a couple ounces at best) So I went to the big huge electronic supply company here in the city and grabbed a spool off the shelf. 1lb of it. Went to the counter and it rang up $28.00!?! WTF?? I went ahead and bought the **** cus I was in shock I think. so I ended up just signing the charge slip and walking out with deer in headlight syndrom. The spool is going back tomarrow for sure. Im not paying $28 for the damn wire alone..

Where did you end up buying your wire and what did you pay??

Re: I need Headlight wiring aid...

Not finding it on grainger. Mcmaster Carr wants $17 for it. Most other online places are charging $17 and above for 1lb. How much do I need is a pound needed or will a half pound get the job done?? I'm shooting for cheap here. Sorry to be a pain in the ***.. everyone keeps kicking out these low low prices and everywhere I look its alot more..

Re: I need Headlight wiring aid...

I got 1/2lb at a place called "Cables and Connectors." It was local to me. I got it for 9 bucks.

1/2lb is plenty, u can probably do two bikes with that much, but that is just a guess.

Re: I need Headlight wiring aid...

Anyone looking for anymore I got a boat load of it, i have 5.5 lb's of it.

I figured it out via the help of a local electrical guru

1 lb of 18 awg wire is equal to 203 ft yes 203 feet.

there is 2 places in town I can get it from.

so if you're gunna do it yourself and can't find the wire, i have it here and can spool you off some and bubble wrap it and some directions and you can have at it, IT'S NOT HARD AT ALL.

U want one pound shipped give me $8 and you can have it.
