What to look for in a used 50
Tomorrow I'm meeting up with a guy to check out his 50. I've never bought a 50 before but have bought used sportbikes and dirtbikes. I have a few questions.
Its a 2000 XR 50 which his young son only rides, he's asking $700 for it is that a good price?
Is there anything vulnerable to a 50 that I definately need to check out?
The main points I am going to look at are the chain\sprockets, cables, tires, brakes, and see how it runs\idles. Anything else I should closely look at.
Any help about this year\model of bike is greatly appreciated.
P.S. What is the shift pattern of the XR's, so I don't look like a total goof?
--Thanks--

That is a terrible price. Why don't you just give me the address and I will head over there and check it out for you a day in advance. Make sure it is up to snuff and all that.
J/K. Nothing should be wrong with that bike if a kid has been riding it. I beat the holy living hell out of mine and if it can hold up to that, they sure can take whatever a kid will give it.
Even if the plastic is beat, you can get new stock plastic cheap off the 'net. Good luck. :YEAH

50's are bulletproof!!! So unless the guy ran it w/o oil, you should have no prob.
But when I was looking for a 50, people said to make sure it starts over on the first kick, if not, at least the second. Some BBK might take a couple tries because of the high compression.
All the way down is nuetral, and all gears you shift up.

Check and make sure that frame isnt stretched, fork legs arent bent. Yeah he said his boy only rode it, but whose not gonna say that when their tryin to get 700 out of a 2000. **** should be very nice.

I would check the oil real quick. Ask him how often he changed it. Even if he never changed it, it'll prolly be fine. It would just give you an idea on how it was mantained, if at all. Another thing to look at is the front shocks. See if they have alot of sag in them, then hold the front brake and rock it back and forth to see if the bushings are shot. If the fork legs are movin around and the tire turns left when you push forward, it's probably 'cause the kid did some major jumping or the guy was riding it.
