Old vs. New Trannys

I been wondering for a while how honda got the newer xr50 and 70's tranny's to shift up into gear instead of down like older z50s and ct70s. Did they flip the shift drum or something?

Re: Old vs. New Trannys

the disadvantage to gp shift on a 50 is it'd be harder to do coasters since you can just lock the shifter up with your foot for neutral and it might be harder to keep it pressed down. Maybe not....

Re: Old vs. New Trannys

I've ridden an old z50 with reverse shifting and it takes a while to get used to pressing down to upshift, but it seemed like it was easier to do after you got used to it. It just sucks switching between the two fiddies.

Re: Old vs. New Trannys

So back to my question: How did they get the newer tranny to shift up instead of down?

SORRY! I'm wanting to build a roadster type bike I seen in a G'Craft catalog. And I'm wanting it to shift like the xr50. Have you seen a web site where I could buy a shift drum, or could I just get an OEM part.

Re: Old vs. New Trannys

I know this is an old post but I'm thinking about getting a ct70h engine to swap in my 50 and I decided i dont want to have to switch between my normal shifting bikes and a reverse shifting fiddy, so what do i have to do to switch the old ct70 tranny to normal all up shifting? Oh yeah, and does anyone know if the coil from the xr50 will work with the ct70 engine and will it wire up to the 50 wiring harness or will i have to splice stuff? thanks for the help

Re: Old vs. New Trannys

no you cant use the xr and ct stuff together
one is points and one is cdi wont work sorry
i like the old style shifters over the new ones
stomping to me is easier than lifting
and on the line its easier for starts just hold it down till the flag drops
theres alot of things different inside the motors so i dont know if it will interchange never done one.just swapped bottom ends alot easier

Re: Old vs. New Trannys

use the XR motor and swap trannys. if u dont like the pattern then get a xl, cl or sl tranny. they shift 1 down and 3 up. thats all that honda ever offered for the 4 speeds. no 4 up sorry man.

Re: Old vs. New Trannys

sandmrider, the XR ignition wont work on the ct motor. y put some old piece of **** on a nice new bike anyhow? the 82 and up motors have a better rod/stroke ratio anyways... thats prolly over most peoples head, so im not gonna explain. if u want a cheap way out, buy a lifan 4 speed manual.

Re: Old vs. New Trannys

81 and down uses a shorter rod. 82 and up uses a longer rod. thats y the pistons are different for those years. the wrist pin is located in different locations. believe me. i have them in stock sitting here.

So could you put the whole top end from an old 70 on a new 50 or are the pistons different because the engines use different rods?
