Bad rings on a 50 are very common and is the reason most older or beaten on 50's smoke (through the exhaust). The oil is passing between the rings and cylinder wall. It is just blowing by and this is why you start to lose compression and power. I don't know what being a 4 stroke would have do do with anything. 2's and 4's can both have bad rings.
Rings cost like $40-$50 for stock size. If you are going to change the rings you would have to be stupid not to do a BIG BORE kit at the time. The big bore comes with the new piston and rings.

if its an 83 you don't want it
stock 50 piston/ring kit with a gasket set is gonna run you about 85 bucks. I just ordered a 88cc piston/rings kit witha gasket set for 90 bucks.
If you go big bore you have to throw down atleast 255 for the new kit. If your looking for the cheapest way out I'd go with the stock kit. But knowing that a stock 50 soon becomes boring I'd go with a bigbore upgrade on that ****!
