Using my XR50 as a moped in Michigan

isn't going to happen.

MICHIGAN VEHICLE CODE (EXCERPT)

Act 300 of 1949

257.32b “Moped” defined.
Sec. 32b.

“Moped” means a 2- or 3-wheeled vehicle which is equipped with a motor that does not exceed 50 cubic centimeters piston displacement, produces 2.0 brake horsepower or less, and cannot propel the vehicle at a speed greater than 30 miles per hour on a level surface. The power drive system shall not require the operator to shift gears.

That sucks. Plus it needs a headlight, taillight, brakelight, signals and horn. Because it doesn't have those items but it is motorized you also can't ride it on the sidewalk.

that would be sweet and all but, what happens when yer cruisin down mainstreet ridin a wheelie and a cop stops u. u say ohh, officer, its a moped and its licensed. he says sweet, thats driving wrecklessly. im writin u a ticket for wreckless operation of a motorized vehicle. 6 points in ohio. say bye bye to yer license. that means not only can u bot ride yer fiddy on the road, but now u cant drive yer car either. yer better off just ridin wherever u want and risk getting caught. ive been caught about 10 times and never got a ticket.

Man, you just don't get it. Riding to the party store. Taking it to the bar. The fun would be endless. Riding at bikeweek without getting hassled would kick ***.

i researched the laws in virginia for about an hour, and found out that here my fiddy is legally a moped, so it can't result in any tickets over $50 or points towards my license (b/c 'operators' aren't even required to have one) - i just need to wear a helmet and after dark i need to have a headlight/taillight (or reflector) to be legal, even if its just a battery powered flashlight or something. if anyone needs the links pm me and i'll get'em (they're at work). so far the cops have stopped us twice (yzfrone did a nice slow wheelie in front of a sheriff), both times they just kinda laughed about it, and told us to find somewhere else to ride.

11 points? What are they for?

I have been on the road for 15 years and I only have had one ticket for speeding on my CBR. It is long gone. I need my license for my job. If I get a DUI I am no longer employeed.

I don't drive or ride drunk. EVER!!! I have been hit by a drunk driver in my truck. It was 330pm on a Monday. It happened when I was much younger and it changed how I viewed what I was doing. I may have a beer or two with dinner but there is no way I am going to get crunked at the bar and then fire it up and ride it home. If you do,you deserve the points and you deserve to go to jail. When I say that I would ride it to the bar, I mean to do it for a laugh. Sorry if you can't go out without getting drunk. You will grow up someday.
