How to maintain my xr 50 with 88 kit

I just bought a 2003 XR 50 and i am hearing some rattling from the engine or front of the bike some where. It happends when i am in high rps is there something wrong with the bike i just bought??

I also wanted to know what to do to restore this bike besides the oil and new gas its been sitting for years.

hmm, not quite sure what the rattle could be. it might sound like the engine but check all the bolts on exhaust, etc. to make sure. sometimes the sound can be deceiving.

other than oil and gas, you could clean the air filter, clean out the carb, and get a new spark plug. if the brakes are shoddy you could get new shoes, if your throttle sticks it is fairly easy to clean. i'm not sure what else!

it's your exhaust heat shield, or the little flange that goes on the cyl at the exhaust port.

Seconding this. I was getting a buzz in the higher rpms and it turned out to be nothing more than a loose bolt on the exhaust can. I also had a buzzing from my heat shield missing a bolt, but I just took it off completely

good call on the heat shield. i remember when the bolts on the heat shield of my car rusted through. the thing sounded like a supercharger, but it wasn't, so it was a horrible noise. ripped that sucker off with some pliers and all was good in the world.

Whenever I get a 50 I adjust the valves, change oil, clean carb, put in a new spark plug, and clean or replace the air filter. If you don't know how to adjust the valves here is a how to video.

they are noisy bikes anyways. Is this motor stock or a big bore?

If it's a big bore, the valves get REALLY loud

Definitely adjust the valves, I usually do them so .002 will slide in and .004 wont go

I do .002 intake and .003 exhaust. You don't need any special tools to adjust the valves. They make a tool but you don't need it.
