Re: street legal 50 in texas?? what does it take
This is exactly how I got my off road bikes street legal in Texas. I just did this with my YZ450 and a pitster pro 2 months ago. If you have any questions let me know and I will try to help you out.
1. You need a headlight with a high/low beam, tail light, brake light, license plate light, one mirror, horn and DOT approved tires. You don't need blinkers in Texas.
2. Get insurance. I was quoted $31 a year through State Farm on an 08 crf50.
3. Take your bike and get a state inspection. You will have to show them proof of insurance and most bike shops do inspections.
4. Take the title, proof of insurance, and the receipt from the state inspection to the county tax office.
5. They will issue you plates and change your title to a street title.

Re: street legal 50 in texas?? what does it take
Most acerbis lights have a high/low beam and then just get a switch for the bars. Baja designs has a ton of stuff including a complete kit to make your bike street legal. There headlight is really ugly though. If you don't use the baja kit then you will need a lighting stator to power your lights. If you search on planet minis you should be able to find a lot more info.

This is what I used to make my YZ street legal
50watt lighting stator
Baja Designs LED tail light with built in plate light
acerbis dhh headlight
DS handlebar switch from motostrano.com
crg mirror
generic horn ran off a 9volt battery
switches for the brake lights

Re: street legal 50 in texas?? what does it take
Are we talking some sort of limited access legal? Like a scooter, moped type thing?
Not to poo poo your idea but I sure hope you cant get out on an interstate or a major highway on a 2' tall bike with a top speed of around 35mph.
****! Talk about getting sucked under an 18 wheeler.
I'd love to sport it around town. Legally that is. I do it from time to time(not legally
) but you really have to pay attention. Cars run up on you hauling *** and act as if you're a stupid lil' kid in the road on a bicycle that needs to get the hell outta the way. I was pegged out in a long 2nd gear peg stander and had an ******* redneck in a big duely truck come up behind me and blast his horn and almost run over me...then gave me the finger and yelled some ****.
Pfffft! People are just douche bags!

Re: street legal 50 in texas?? what does it take
You can make any bike regardless of size, completely street legal in Texas following the steps that I posted. I have a friend in Austin with a street legal crf50 and here is my street legal pitster pro that I ride all over the place including quick trips on the highway. When you make it street legal you can ride it wherever you want. It's not like a moped, it's titled the exact same as a sport bike.

Re: street legal 50 in texas?? what does it take
Thats so cool! So whats the top speed of your bike? I just cant imagine a stocker being enough to get out on a busy highway and hang with traffic. People run up on you and over you. I've almost been hit a couple of times just in a busy lot at Sams club.
It's almost as if they get their jollies hauling *** up on you then acting pissed that you are in their almighty way holding up their progress doing something fun.
I thought I was going to have to beat the **** outta of a douche bag the other night. When he realized I was'nt some punk teenager, he bitched out and said he was sorry and burned off.
haha!

The funniest was this douche at cycle gear pulled up on an sv650 and walked up to me and said "maybe one day you will be able to own a real bike like mine". I nearly fell on the ground laughing.
Re: street legal 50 in texas?? what does it take
I got it up to 78mph but it was really sketchy. 65mph is cruises along just fine. The motor is 160cc with around 15 horsepower and the bike only weighs 140 pounds. So it's pretty quick for what it is. It will smoke my little drz motard.
For a chinese bike I am extremely impressed with pitster pro. I changed all the shitty chinese fluids out to high quality stuff before I ever rode the bike, changed out a lot of the chinese bolts for quality hardware, put loctite on everything, adjusted the valves, put a mikuni vm26 carb on it, and greased all the bearings. I ride this bike hard and it is holding up great. The only bad thing is that it is loud. With the fmf exhaust it is louder than my 450.

To the OP hit up Pitster for their lighting kit its only like $180:

Re: street legal 50 in texas?? what does it take
I had one on order with the 187 kit and gearing but it turns out they are too loud for NJ. Hopefully they will figure something out or I have been looking into the new lxr 14/14 with a 250 engine. I don't know if either will happen anytime soon though.

would that be the main source i hook up all the light to? if so do you know how i would hook that up to the crf50?
Re: street legal 50 in texas?? what does it take
I used a 50watt stator on my yz because that was the only thing available. Buy the highest wattage stator that you can for the 50 so that your lights will be bright. What pitster meant about the lighting coil is your stator. The stator has a power and ground coming out of it that you hook to a voltage regulator and then to your lights. Installing the stator is simple. I would recommend getting a repair manual for step by step instructions.
I really like my pitster but the gpx160 motor is way to loud. Even with the stock exhaust it sounded like I was riding a chopper.
