Difficulty shifting?

Hey guys,
I've got a 2001 XR-50. When I bought it, it was set up to stunt, so it's probably had a rough life. I just finished out the old gasoline (age unknown), and changed the tires and oil. I used Castrol GTX 10W-40. Both before and after the oil change, I've had some trouble shifting. Often I hit the shifter and nothing happens, or I'll have to hold on it for a second or two before it'll shift. Obviously this kinda sucks because it makes it hard for me to know if/when the bike is going to shift like I want it to. The problem existed before my oil change, and has persisted since, although it seems somewhat less noticeable now than it used to be.

Any suggestions?

If it's at all relevant, I'm a huge dude, 6'6", and the only 2 other bikes I have any real amount of experience on are a Honda Nighthawk 250 and a Kawasaki Ninja 500R.
