50 Project

So i just picked up an 04' CRF50 off a buddy of mine whos headed to the marines. Got for pretty cheap, however it needs some work. Motor runs beyond mint so thats a plus. It came with a BBR Big Bar Kit and street tires. However the bar is bent and the tires are wooped lol. Long story short i decided to strip it down 100% and check everything out. Heres what i found:

The Bad but easy/cheap fixes:
-One bent fork shaft - no wonder the tire was rubbing on the fork tube
-Handlebars are slightly bent
-Needs a front brake lever/cable
-Needs the throttle assembly and possibley the cable
-Needs grips
-Rear axle bent
-Tires are shot
-Plastics are wooped

The super bad:
-Tail end looks as if it was cracked, then rewelded right where the seat bolts too. I guess the bike used to have a huge 12bar and it bent the tail end/then cracking it. So its all reinforced just doesnt look to nice.
-Welded on pegs, i was told this isnt good but others say its better than being on the axle.

----

So the first list isnt to bad, all semi-cheap from what ive seen. However whats your opinion on the 2nd list? This is my first 50 and im learning. I could just get a new frame/swing arm, or just clean it up myself and weld it proper and maybe remove the pegs? Sorry for the long thread.. Pics coming in about 10min!

Re: 50 Project

pics as promised. You can sort of see the welds on the frame, also the bent fork. Sorry about the quality, poor lighting in my house for an iphone.

EDIT: the bars on the frame (straight peices) are the old weld on 12bar. Im going to take them off and reinforce everything i think. Not 100% sure yet.

Re: 50 Project

yah i picked it up for 300 bucks, mainly due to it runs amazing. Figure if i put 200-300 into it, then ill be at 600 for a mint 50 which is what they go for average and in the process i learned about a 50 inside an out.

EDIT: Today i grind off that old 12bar and those weld on pegs. Make everything smooth and start to fix the frame.

Re: 50 Project

If the tires hold air , use them . Just worry about the fork leg and throttle assembly . I'm sure you could find some used parts on planetminis or fiddylife .

Re: 50 Project

grinded those pegs off, so the swingarm is officially back to normal! However i tried salvageing the frame and id rather just get a new frame than patching this one up even more. So new frame and fork leg, than the scructual part of the bike will be allset.

Anybody know the best paint to use for a frame/swing arm? The local powdercoater quoted me 70, then when i call him to make an appt he says 150. So screw that!

Re: 50 Project

dont mata wat kinda paint you use, if its not powdercoat, it will chip and look like ****. yur local powdercoat guy proly uped tha price if it needs sandblasting. save yur self some cash, go to autozone, get "aircraft stripper" or "autostrip". this stuff works, spray on, let it sit, paint falls off!!

Re: 50 Project

i wouldnt say any paint wont work. ive painted wheels on cars and they look good for couple yrs and those take more abuse than some little 50 doing 25-30? mph. This bike will never see dirt/gravel, only pavement. Strictly a parkin lot bitch So i may attempt the frame/swing arm and fork tubes in black. I was quoted without me stripping 300, with me stripping 200. Id rather spend 30 bucks in prepping/painting. Its all in the prep work. I was just asking on what people usually use who dont want to pay for powdercoating

BIG - yah BBR is all out..

Thats how this bike looked when I got my hands on it, its a 2000 and had a rought life, some powder coat, billet parts and its all good! I stripped it down so fast , cuz I didn't want to look at it anymore, I forgot to snap before shots, LOL

Thats a stage III 88 kit, the old motor was clapped out, so the stage III was the way to go cuz everything on the top end is spankin new. I got a grip of parts over here if you need anything, some used parts, and lots of new billet I can get full frame, swingarm, forks, peg mounts, side engine cases powdercoated for 2 hundo, it makes it like puttin together a brand new bike, everything all fresh. I send out the nuts and bolts to get plated too, they come back like new, and in black. I love restoring worn out 50s to the pimped out stunt minis.
