Honda 50 Hand Brake Trouble
Honda 50 Hand Brake Trouble
Hey I Got A "50 Stunt" Handbrake Kit. I Put It On And It Works But Its Not Strong Enuff For Me. With My Whole Hand I Couldent Get It To Lock Up If I Was On The Gas Tank. Let Alone 1 Finger Or Even 2. Is There A Way To Make It Stronger.. Ive Moved The Lever Thats Attached To The Drum And It Dint Do Anything Ive Adjusted Everything.. My Brake Pads Are Fairly Fresh. I Can Use It To Do A Wheelie And Do A Few Cirlces But Its Not Strong Enuff To Trust Totally. If Any One Knows If I Just Got A Bad Kit Or Im Just A Big *****.. Let Me Know How You Feel About Your Handbrake.. Thanks A Few Pointers Would Be Welcome...

Aww Dude That Would Be A Dream Come True... How You Get It Rigged Up Like That.. Do You Have The Extended Lever At The Drum? Mabe Ill Just Get Brand New Pads Or Something. Its Driving Me Crazy!!
Re: Honda 50 Hand Brake Trouble
cheaper normal lever one. i take my rear rim off once in a while to spray brake cleaner all over pads and drum. also takes some time getting it all adjusted right
My 50 Stunt handbrake works like a champ. It may be that you need to skuff the inside of the drum with some 100 grit sandpaper. That should do the trick but all that I know is that my 50 Stunt handbrake locks up and it strong enoughf to do all sorts of stuff.

Re: Honda 50 Hand Brake Trouble
There are several things to check to get the rear brake dialed in.
1) Make sure there are no tight bends or kinks in the handbrake cable at all, it sould come off the lever, across the bike in front of the bars, down the right side under the shrowd to the coil mount, then inside the top motor mount to keep it away form the exhaust, then to the swingarm braket. I have seen lots of people try to tuck the cable in the bars, or route it down the wrong side of the bike zigzigin it throught the frame then wonder why the lever wont move
Keep it as straight of a shot as possible! You can also lube the cable with some lightwieght oil or cablee lube, NO WD40 though, its more of a solvent.
2) Good shoes, it make a huge difference, you can try cleenin um, scuffin the drum with 100 grit Like Aarron said, hit the entire thing with some Brake cleaner, then put it back together and ride for a while, it will usually gets better within 15 minutes. Mash it around and lock up the back brake with your foot for a while till everything seats in. If that doesn't work, get some new shoes form honda, or 50stunt carries the honda shoes also. Drum Brakes take maintnance!! I have seen shoes with tons of meat left on them still, not bite at all, replace with new stock ones, then lock up no problem!!
These are the 2 most common proplems I have come across, and cured! Good luck, hope you get it dialed in, I know how frustrating the drum brakes can be.
Thanks for the support guys!!

Re: Honda 50 Hand Brake Trouble
I was looking at the 50stunt handbrake kit and so far it seems to be the top one. adjusting the brakes to catch quicker may also help, so it doesn't have so much free play when compressing the lever/pedal.
Re: Honda 50 Hand Brake Trouble
dude do it all and i have had mine almost 2yrs its all adjustment after adjustment like he said go stomp on it a couple times to set it propre the other thing is locking up might not be the right trem ican do set standers all the way to 12 wit the handbrake from 50stunt ryan was a big help setting it up also it does need time liike the motor warming up after a while take ice water and pure it over the rear hub to cool the pads and sand them to keep from glazing over that is we ride 10 hour sessions every satarday love the hand brake and the x tensin only makes it smoother to coast and do highchairs check your vid under bmc in the xr 50 fourm we rock all 50 stunt parts the sprocket guard is a well worth investment looks killer to by the way ryan bring that **** to florida for a comp ill bring fiddy deep

my handbrake works great...make sure you hook it up rite..... you most likely have it upside down my buddy had a handbrake for almost a year and it would never lock up i got mine and it locks up with one finger.... why his was upside down the whole time....
Re: Honda 50 Hand Brake Trouble
If you still want stronger after you get it fixed 50 Stunt sells a extended brake arm that will give you more leverage. Here is the link for it. Good luck..
