asking someone to properly shoot action video, especially with a camera they don't even own, is like asking my gramma to scrape tail crossover.. and tellin' her she don't get a thumbrake (because grams needs that thumbrake, she got arthritis in her hip and has had trouble rollin' them slow ever since)
find a better friend, one who is smarter, show him how to keep it fully wide, and tell him to just leave the zoom alone. zoom is the number one reason amateur video looks amateur.

Also....depending on conditions and the shot you are going for try and have it on a tripod to help steady certian shots. Sucks to lose part of a shot because you friend can't pan well.
