It's now Unauthorized Absence. Being UA over 30 days, you are considered a deserter, and under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, it is punishable by death, during war time (i.e. right now)

it is punishable by death, but we arent in king arthurs court either. no congressman is gonna let that sheet happen..
my step-brother deserted when his unit got orders, and we was gone like 4 months. he finally turned himself in, cuz he couldnt get work anywhere, and he was tired of being broke all the time.
he went back, they threw him in jail, then on restriction, then discharged him. he's still a piece of ca-ca, and proably deserves the death penalty...

when i got out i thought oh well i will join the reserves.......well it sucked
thought about not goin to the weekend warrior training well as it turns out missin drill is like going awol or ua whatever ya wanna call it... A pfc in my unit didnt show and got f@##$ they sent him to Ft Cambell where he did time and then instead of a discharge they sent him to kuwait.
he shoulda just filed for a hardship or fail 3 pt tests

Re: A.W.O.L questions
you can also "miss a movement" which is just as bad as being U.A. i.e. if say your unit is leaving for a deployment at 0800 and you over sleep or just dont show up until say 1000 and they leave without you, and even if you still show up you can/most likely will be charged with missing the movement and be FRIIIIIIIIIIIIED!

Nothing happens to people who go AWOL. Every single person I know that has gone Awol has ended up caught and the only thing they get is a reduction in pay and some extra duty. Dude just got caught before XMas leave, he was AWOL for 8 months, they busted his rank down and put him on Extra duty and now he's gearing up and leaving with us to Iraq. He will still get out with an Honorable.

I had multiple people in my unit go UA for over 30 days during my 9+ years active duty and saw all but 1 get a bad conduct discharge or worse(dishonorable) which puts a felony on your record and you are screwed for life mostly. No owning property, no voting, no owning guns.. Pretty much better off in jail...
Of course I was in the Corps and it's a different world there than any of the rest of the services.
