Motorcyclist becomes Interstate 93 tunnel's first fatality
By Associated Press, 4/16/2003 08:40
BOSTON (AP) A motorcyclist traveling with two other bikers became the newly opened Interstate 93 tunnel's first fatality when he crashed and was run over by his companions, state police said.
Ramon Carrasco, 31, of Boston, apparently lost control about 10 p.m. Tuesday while traveling north on Interstate 93, struck the side of the tunnel and was thrown to the pavement, where he was struck by the other two motorcycles, according to State Police Sgt. Edward Principe. He said Carrasco was pronounced dead at the scene.
Treated for minor injuries were the other bikers Anthony Crutchfield, 30, of Somerville and Manuel Ortiz-Moyet, 24, of Boston.
Principe said the accident remains under investigation, but the motorcycles were believed to be traveling about 70 mph in a 45 mph zone.
The northbound section of the new tunnel, a one-and-a-half mile stretch of highway that runs beneath downtown Boston and connects with the new Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, opened last month. The southbound lanes are set to open next year.
The tunnel is a key part of the $14.6 billion Big Dig highway project, officially known as the Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel project. It is among the largest public works projects in U.S. history.
