not sure of what quad ya have.. but

remove right rear tire
remove hub, should be a cotter pin and nut
6 nuts to remove and turn sprocket a 1/8 of a turn and off she comes

then u should be able to remove the 2 locks nuts on the axle by the carrier and then start working on yanking the axle out

thats my guess.. ive never removed 1 yet

Re: axle

I know on my 250R the sprocket hub it permanetly attached to the axle so the axle must come out from the left side. On the right side there is an axle locknut which acutally has backwards threads on it so it must be turned from right to left to loosen this also holds the rear rotor. Once that is loose you have to remove a c-clip from the right side so that the axle can be pulled out. obviously you have to take off the rotor, tires, hubs all that stuff too. I dont know about the rest of the hondas but I am sure its very similar. Hope it helps

Re: axle

Did you loosen the axle lock nut and remove the c-clip? Cause otherwise it should just slide right out. good luck wit it

On my 250R its on the right side of the carrier, next to the rotor hub. Should be the same for the 400ex
