Checking engine oil

Anyone know if you should check your oil while the engines running? While the oils cold and engine off? Or, let the engine warm up, shut it off, and than check it?

Check the oil with the engine off. If you check it cold, the level may be a little bit higher because all of the oil will have settled to the oilpan. Also note you will get a different reading if you have your bike sitting on the side kickstand versus sitting upright on a swingarm stand.

I was told to start it, run it for a few minutes, shut it off. pull the bike upright and then check it.

Let the bike warm up to proper temperature, preferably while riding it. Let it sit for a few minutes to make sure the proper amount of oil has returned to the pan. Check.

This is the same way to change oil.

start the bike and warm it up. then shut the bike off, stand it up straight and then check the oil. that will give you the best measurment. also you may want to over fill the oil a little during oil changes so stop oil starvation during long wheelies. hope all that helps.

Some people think it's good to add extra oil, some don't.

I personally don't. It causes high oil pressure and the oil finds it's way out of places it shouldn't.

since when has extra oil EVER caused high oil pressure? you should find the choad that told you that, and slap him repeatedly... if you're the one that thought it up, slap yourself repeatedly. an oil pump will only pump so much oil..... extra oil in the oil pan CANNOT cause the oil pump to create too high of a pressure.... and if you've got so much oil into an engine that its "finding its way out of places it shouldnt" you need to sell your bike and take up crocheting, because you have no clue what you're doing.
