noob with a gixxer -- plz help!

Alright. New(ish) bike. It's my first one.

1998 gixxer 600 SRAD. No pics yet, but they's coming. It's scratched up pretty good, so I think I'm gonna slap some new paint on it, and telefonica the muddafugga out w/these decals I found.

The guy I bought it from was a tool. He gave me all this info about it, but I've got a pretty good feeling that 98% of it was bullshit. So before I go out and try stunting, I want to make sure my bike's not going to take a dump mid-wheelie.

For starters, it probably needs new oil. The guy told me NEVER to put synthetic oil in it. Seems weird. He told me that it's got a wet-clutch, so synthetic oil will make the gears slip. I've never heard of that before. It's probably hard to get the bike up if the gears slip....dunno.

Another thing I noticed is that it runs REALLY hot. I know it's supposed to be moving most of the time, but stoplights are everywhere... I mean, it's not even spring yet, and it's already burning my ass. Imagine when I try to ride it in 100 degree heat. There has to be some way to drop the temp a little bit, right? Different oil thickness, new radiator, different coolant, different spark plugs, etc...?

I'm looking to do some aftermarket stuff too, so if somebody's got an SRAD, lemme know what's good and what sucks ass. Anything you guys could drop on me would be awesome.

thx
:YEAH

u didnt really ask anything....isnt there a local AZ message board?
those local boards are good for newbies....i find them more helpfull
as they can come over and help u...also good to find riding buddies...

One of my buddies is a member here.

He turned me onto this site. lol

As far as Arizona message boards, the only ones I've seen are a bunch of harley-riding assholes. streetbike tips from them would be like "sell the damn thing and buy a sportster, ya punkass", only with more typos and one of these at the end: :twofinger

Yeh, first bike.

I'm kind of worried about putting synthetic oil in it, so I really want to know whether it's going to wreck it or not. I mean, will synthetic oil wreck a bike with a wet clutch?

That, and how can I make it run a little cooler?

As far as background, my damn friend kyle, a.k.a. "ELEVEN" on here, got a brand spankin' new zx-6r last year, so we're all starting to get on bikes. Old, new, scratched, clean. wtf ever, as long as it cruises and does a wheelie or two. Heh - oddly enough I moved out here from Chicago. Way west on Belmont ave. \m/

what ever oil u choose will be fine...dont trip on that...
Red cap Mobil 1 will be fine...

cooler?? maybe change out the coolant...but...bikes run hot...if it gets over 235+ maybe worry about it....

hey just be thankful you don't have a cbr600rr on a hot bikeweek day with underseat exhaust, ouch trust me. ya they run hot don't bother with full synthetic, i run semi takes care of me well. i know people that run less and it's fine, make sure it's bike oil not car oil not good for the clutches. just make sure your changing it on time, and please change filter too, don't reuse. used bikes are kinda nerver racking but we've all been through that. :2cents

Word. It's been around 220 in town. That's really the only place I'm worried. We'll see once summer comes.

LMAO @ the RR with the undertail. That's gotta suck for the passenger.

i forgot what the 600rr used to run at, but trust me you'll know if somthings wrong. get her checked out before summer, you don't want a bike down when it's time to ride.

oh sorry man i live in buffalo,ny i just figure everyone has to put the bike in hibernation. and not see it for like 6 months and have to dig a twelve foot trench just to get to it,cause the garage she is in is completly buried. but still would get it checked out before it gets to be a scorcher. is there such a thing in not riding cause its too hot???

how many clutches have you gone through. i'm not bein a smart mouth. for real technically the car oil should burn those things clean out.

Re: noob with a gixxer -- plz help!

Cars use special transmission fluid in the tranny, while bikes use the oil to lubricate everything. So supposedly bike oil is made to work with the transmission while car oil would be insufficient. Don't cheap out on oil, it's one of the most important things that kills bikes the quickest when not used right.

Re: noob with a gixxer -- plz help!

with car oil, you may get clutch slippage and you may not, but why chance it? motorcycle oil isn't killing my wallet and im a cheap ass. also buy a bottle of water wetter from a local autostore and follow instructions on the back, should help with the cooling probs.

and in az there is down time, its called summer, seriously. in phoenix my bike has overheated at night.
