Dirtbike opinions

I wanna get y'alls opinions. I'm thinking about getting rid of my raptor and getting a dirt bike either this spring or summer. I plan on doing mainly mx, but some trails and maybe if i grow a set, some fmx. I've always ridden 125 2 strokes, but I want to step up. I either want to get a 250 4 stroke, 250 2 stroke, or a 450 4 stroke. I will probably stay away from a 450 though. I would prefer the 250 2s so that I can grow into it if need be, and they're easier and cheaper to work on from my experience. I know a 250 4 stroke is a step up from a 125 2s, but still under a 250 2s.

So I guess what I'm asking is what y'all prefer. Oh yeah, I'm 5'11" 180 lbs.

I'd go 250T. The 250F are super high in maintinance, and the 450F aren't much better. 250T is pretty comparable, and alot of fun.

2 stroke 250 ALLLL the way, IF you tune it right, good pipe, everythings even, the bike will have power all the way through, I reccomend getting a 99-2000 YZ250(bike of the year) or a '02 and newer CR250.

+1
I read on another site that Honda recommends the top end be rebuilt every 15-20 hrs. and a total rebuild every 40 hrs. I'm not sure how long they last in the real world but that would be more than enough to scare me away from buying one.

I have a Suzuki RM-Z250 and I love it, I used to ride 2 strokes, but would never buy one again. I HIGHLY recommend the 4 cycle MX bikes, they're wonderful compared to the 2 strokes of old and barely weigh more.

yep i rode my first 250 2-stroke this weekend and it was great, i normally ride a ktm 620 rxc big ass thing heavy, awsome on the street, but when i jumped on the 250 2 stroke it was freaking awsome so light and flickable.

If anyone tells you 4t's are bad or good or that 2t's are bad or good, don't even bother listening to the the prick, he's biased, and most probably an MX wannabee who doesnt know **** all about the diffs.

If well maintained, both would last quite a bit. If not, the 2t will bite the dust pretty quick, resulting in a rebuild. If you dont maintain a 4t, then (apart from being a ****head) you also gonna receive a nasty repair bill.

I'd prefer a 2t though, because they wont be around much longer. And they sound sweet. And they smell better than my chick. And thats saying a lot!!!

I am running the 05 KX250F and I would never ride another 2 smoke ever again. My 4 stroke is lighter than all the 05 2 strokes and can out do anything out there.

IMO get a 250 4 stroke and you will never ride anything else unless you upgrade to a 450 4 stroker.

23.

ive got a 125 2t, and love it. Love the noise love the smell! Really light also. Round the track its great, constantly doing something, where as my mates who have 4ts say that they sometimes laze in the corners as the bikes torque will bring them out of it.
Im 2t definatly. Im dreading a go on a 4t, incase i want one :(

Re: Dirtbike opinions

depends on what type of riding you plan. if you're racing and worried about being as fast as you can, 4-stroke. if you're just riding to have fun, i'd go with the 2-stroke. easier, and cheaper to work on, and upgrade and are lighter than the 4-strokes. i've got a 98 cr250 w/milled head, pro circuit goodies, and port n polish job that i'd put up against just about any bike. i've climbed some nice hills with a passenger at slow speeds, and i'm 5'10" 180lbs.

low budget = 2-stroke
wealthy and mechanically inclined = 4-stroke

Well put Jwhite. the 2 strokes are so much cheaper, especially if you are doing the work yourself.

Re: Dirtbike opinions

It's sure been a while since I posted in this thread, but I'll probably get a 250T here in the next month or so. Gotta get rid of some other toys first. I'm not poor and I'm pretty mechanically inclined, so working on a four stroke would be no problem, but there are other things I'd rather spend my time and money on instead of working on a toy.
