Made a hitch carrier for the XR50.

I used my welding skills  this past weekend to ghetto fab a carrier that would slide into the hitch on my wife's van for the fiddy. I have about $50 into it total. It is only a class one hitch so I can't carry much more that the 50 on it. 200 lbs tounge weight so I figure it should hold ok. I am going to strap some topsoil bags down on it first to test it out. I sure would hate to lose the kids bike if my welding sucks.

I also need to add a couple of eyebolts and a wheel chock and then it will be finished. Probably about $80 total into it with those two additions.

Let me feel the love. :cheers

Pictures below.

#2
one of my boyz made one up for his truck...i'll have to get pics of it...the one you made looks like the 50 would just roll off of it...is there a wheel stop there? my boy used some like 3" c channel...andput stops at each end and welded some tabs on it to hook up the tie straps..it works sweet....like i said i'll have to get pics

they sell those everywhere for like 60 bucks....i found one at wal mart...but cool project none the less...always good to do something yourself

thats sick ! Now you need some tracks so it'll just slide in there and tie it down ..

That's pretty neat but one thing I love about my fiddy is it's size and the ability to put it inside my vehicle. Just wondering, if you got a minivan there, obviously it will fit inside, why not just do that?

bikefrk 05-16-2003 10:25 PM

That is a Mercury Villager. The damn rear seat doesn't come out, just slides back and forth so if I don't take the 2nd row buckets out there really is no place to put it. On top of that problem, when we go camping, this will give us more room inside for our gear. Looks cool rolling down the road too. :)

The carrier I made fits into my car's receiver also. When we are heading out for some riding,I can take either vehicle now.

Sometimes it is so dirty when we are done riding, I don't want it making a huge mess in the vehicle.

Plus, I wanted to practice my welding.

Had some square stock laying around. Chop saw it to size. Square it up. Weld away. If you build one,get the heavy duty mesh. The thin mesh that I used didn't take to the welder that well. It just melted it. I had to have my bro finish that up with the wire feed welder that he has.

When you size up the piece that goes into the receiver, jam it all the way in then back it out a little. That gives you a little breathing room for getting the pin in and out.

I also slid a solid piece inside the one that goes into the receiver for some added strength. Stops it from flexing too much.

If you want detailed pics I can get some tomorrow for you.
