towing a bike, with rear wheel on the ground?

Is it hard on the tranny or anything to tow a bike with the rear wheel on the ground?

I'm working 140 miles out of town, and I want to bring my bike with me, but it's gonna be a while before I could afford a trailer..
But it would be no problem to buy some steel, and build something to hold the front wheel of my bike off the ground, with the rear on the ground..

Not worried about wearing out tires, it's only 140 miles, and I have about 15 rear tires sitting in my garage.. Just not wanting to tear up my tranny or motor in any way

I've seen it done but not sure if you hit a bump that it would jump into gear and then you're gonna leave skit marks everywear.

Seriously? Ever think of removing the chain? It will work fine if you do. My friend used to haul his bike from Nashville to Flint with the rear tire on the ground and the chain removed. Never had a problem.

ya I thought about that, but I dislike reusing master links (had them come off ater re-use) and I'd hate to be installing a new master link every time I make the trip, twice a week!

Re: towing a bike, with rear wheel on the ground?

I want to eventually build a tiny trailer just for hauling 2 bikes at a time.. But that wont be for a while as that'll cost a decent little bit

Find a clip style master. Don't tow it in neutral, you will **** up the trans eventually.

Re: towing a bike, with rear wheel on the ground?

Why wouldn't sliding the axle forward, pulling chain off sprocket and tieing it out of the way work. That's what I was thinking of doing. not removing the master.
