R1 stand ups

R1 stand ups
Have a 04 R1. Have sit downs down pat for the most part in first and second gear. Tried doing stand ups a few times, (on the rear sets and staggered). Both felt really awkward when clutching it up. Second gear you gotta be going a little bit to get it in the power band and in first its so damn touchy that it scares the hell out of me. Any suggestions? Thanks

2nd gear. 4-5k rpms. clutch it up ..maybe 40-45- mph . ride wheelie :YEAH
i never touch my brake on the street but i do 55-60 for the most part. try stagger to begin with. alot of ppl hate the r1's passenger pegs because they are so high but its still the most confortable way for me.
lemme know how ya do. keep us posted.

Keep doing what your doing but use the BRAKE to bring you down. Once your brain recongnizes that you can use the foot brake to save yourself, instead of rolling off throttle, start increasing the height of each wheelie til your at BP. Just keep dragging it and increasing height, little by little. If you do start dragging brake a little (to keep your brain from forgetting its there), just be aware of brake fade. Once you get good, you clutch it up near BP, tap the brake to stop your progress, then slowly increase the height till at or beyond BP. Tap tap the brake to keep you in BP.

Re: R1 stand ups
I geared my '02 R1...-1, +6.....and it made 2nd gear perfect for learning. It gives it a little more pop for the clutch up, and lowers your speeds a bit. I'ld clutch up 2nd at about 25mph(indicated), and balance it out at about 40mph. First takes some finesse, but after you get 2nd dialed....you'll get it. Seat time, and.........more seat time. Good luck. +1 on all the advice about learning brake control as stated ^^^.

rode an 04 R1 for 3 yrs and 1st thing I did was -1 +2 for highway **** and youll get some engine braking safer for newbs that aren't always on the brake which you should be even if you start out having to ride it a little just be make it feel natural it's the only safety net you have ALWAYS did stand ups once i did my first one again a bigger bp and more room for body english to keep it up or bring it back and u dont need to stagger an r1 although as on any bike staggered gives you a bigger bp that thing has so much power it will come up in ANY gear standing up and standing either staggered or not is always the best and safest way to go this may sound crazy but I used to drive around the highway on that bike standing up just to get used to the feeling careful on that damn thing man I still wonder today how i survived those 3 years on a geared r1 without ending up locked up or on the fn rememberence forum

CLUTCH. its gonna be the same for w/e yr
2nd gear is perfect for the street. these are fast bikes. keep the rpms low . clutch hard to BP. these bikes also have TONSS of engine brake. i never touched the foot brake on the street but cover it just incase!
good luck.
and from one r1 rider to the next...keep it a minty street bike and buy a 600

Re: R1 stand ups
I wouldnt hop the bike learn by using your clutch in second and you dont need to be going fast in second to do this, that bike has plenty of power. Just head to a quite road and keep the bike around 20mph and stand up and play with the clutch, watch what RPMs your bringing the bike up at each time. Each time you bring it up you will learn something ie.. to much gas, not enough, body position etc... As you progress you will go higher and higher and learn more about body position and correcting your self. Your a long way from BP, learn control first.
And always cover your brake ALWAYS learn rear brake while your learning wheelies this way you dont have to retrain yourself later
