Motard Question...

ok well im getting out of the 4 wheeler and going to try and pick up a 4 stroke dirtbike so i can motard it. I was wondering if the 250 is just as good as the 450. i know the displacement and such are different...but is there any really big diff besides the obvious power? i can decide between honda or a suzuki/kawi. also...how are the ktms...anyone know? Thanks.

Re: Motard Question...

WR400.. just got one. Reason, its more torquey than the 426/450. Doesnt have to be rebuilt as much, and has Steel valves (they dont break). Also they are cheap since they came out in 98 99.

I had a choice between a 450 WR or the 400. Took the 400. But overall everyone says all 3 Yamahas are GREAT! WR450 is still for sale in Austin if you are interested! Dude take GREAT care of his bikes. Holler if you are serious

Re: Motard Question...

well ive gotta sell the kfx first and foremost. but after that...i was kinda lookin at a honda...ive never been too fond of yamahas for some reason. dunno why. i saw a ktm on ebay that was GANGSTER. i just can decide if i wanna buy one already built up or if i wanna just buy a 450 or 250 and put the wheels and tires on myself

Re: Motard Question...

Schooler - heard BBR makes a frame kit to put an XR200 motor into a CR125 chasis. For some reason I was thinking that setup motard'd out was right down your alley.

Tim - if you go KTM, go ALL out, 520! KTM's are great, I like the EXC line, rode a couple when I did harescrambles. However, my reason for going non Honda, was torque and price. CRF's are $$$. BUT, the XR650R was also appealing. Happened to find a WR first though.

Re: Motard Question...

nah schooler im not going to get a 230. thanks for the advice tho. if anything itll be a ktm 450. those 525s are just TOOO gangster for me haha. im just getting a motard/db so i can get some decent skills down for when i get my big bike in a couple of years. the motard will be fun to have around. my 4 wheeler has just gotten old after 2 years of having it. im just gunna sell it. i saw a nice used ktm 450 for 2199 at a honda dealership. so i might go and scoop that or a crf up cuz i saw one of them with exhaust for like 34 i think. both were 04s. im leaning more towards the ktm because everyone has a honda and i hardly EVER see ktms out there unless ofcourse im watching supermoto races on speed or the duece (espn 2).

only thing is...those damned wheels and tires are SO expensive. but at eastcoastwheels.com you can get kind of like a kit that comes with wheels, tires, hd spokes, gears, chain, and a couple other things for about 23 sumthin i think. im leaning that way. so all together about 5, give or take a couple hundo, for a motard sounds good to me.

when i get it mikie well have to ride for sure. hell youre only 200 miles away, plus ive got alot of family that lives in SA. ull have to teach me some stuff haha.

edit: anyone wanna buy a 2k3 kfx 400 for 2500? haha. ill sell it for 23 cash..but ud have to wait for me to get the title from the bank. lemme know if yall know anyone. ill deliver for a hundo bucks.

I have heard that KTM's are not very durable and take a large amount of maintenance to keep them from blowing up. No personal expericence, just what I heard over at supermotardjunkie.

Re: Motard Question...

Check out http://www.thumpertalk.com/

East Coast Wheels is a great place, However, you dont need Talon hubs etc. You just need spokes and rims. Unless you plan on racing and jumping (and even then its a dirtbike the stock hubs are fine) the $400 hubs arent needed.

I got mine for 2,200 w/ extra plastics, new bearings, Scotts, suspension work, berm busters etc. The wheels are next! Without hubs, im looking at around $400/500 + tires to get it motard ready.

Def. hit me up when you get er done! Everyone is in Austin this weekend, including alot of H-town folk. To bad I dont have it ready yet!

Re: Motard Question...

so from 1 to 10 how much better was the braking? The reason I ask, is I want to go back and forth. Two sets of wheels, but I dont wanna ding a really $$ 320mm on the dirt.

Re: Motard Question...

If you get a KTM the hard parts catalog has all the parts you need to motard out a KTM. They have a set up w/ the 320 rotor but you use the stock caliper and master. It's easy to switch back and forth. takes about 20 minutes after you get the hang. You don't want a 320 on dirt. Too much brake power.

Re: Motard Question...

Dude the KTM's Supermotards are SWEET! I've seen them at the races and they absolutely dominate. They do cost a little more but they are the fastest bikes out there. The only thing that I saw that could keep up with them was a new Husqvarna that a pro rider was racing but he ended up in 3rd place to two pimped out KTM's! If I get a full blown supermotard I'm probably going to go with the new KTM 560 that's coming out!
