Your bike is pimp, I hope to do the same as soon as my 954 sells. How hard is that to start? How loud is the FMF exhaust, I want to build mine street legal? Where did you get your rims laced and trued?

Thanks dude,

Unfortunatly I can only answer some questions for you since I bought the bike as it sits (except for the carb and airbox mod) but here's a rundown:

The 650's have a compression release lever that you must use during the startup process. It's really simple once you get the hang of it and the bike usually starts right up the first kick. Much easier to start than any 2-stroke I've ever owned. The FMF exhaust is loud as F*** at wide open throttle. Watch the video that will be posted in the stunt videos section next Monday or Tuesday and you will here it.

I don't know who laced the rims but it was done locally..

The bike also has a BajaDesigns streetlegal lighting kit... basically a approved headlight kit w/ small battery/kill switch/key/front and rear turnsignals/mirrors/taillight/brakelight/ I took most of that junk off except the headlight. To run all the lighting and have it work properly at low rpms you need a stronger stator which I haven't installed.

Also if you end up getting a XR650R the stock Keihin carb WILL NOT WORK for stunting. Might as well toss it in the garbage... It will not function properly past 11:00 and dies during endos. If you go back and look at the reviews of this bike you will see they had probems with it running going through whoop sections on the track...so yeah.. if your stunting its gonna be much worse. We tried all kinds of jetting and float adjustments to no effect... I even called a Keihin tech support in Japan and the dude just said the carb was not meant to be run at extreme angles.....so basically your gonna spend $400 on an Edelbrock Qwiksilver carb.... but I promise you the bike will run upside down after that **** is installed.

Hope this helps!

Re: 256North's XR650R Motard

I hope get the XR in a month or two, but for now i'm getting a 1992 Yamaha xt 225. My buddy is selling it me for $500. the XT has a problematic carb also.I have seen a 33mm mikuni kit for $325 for it. Instead of buying the new Suzuki 400 SM for $6K, I am getting a used 01-04 XR 650R for $3k and adding $3k in wheels, brakes, lighting, carburetor, and exhaust. It will make for a much better bike for the same money.

Hey I am very happy to see this post!!!
I am also thinking about getting an 05 or 06 xr650r to convert to supermoto. I will probably be getting it in agust if everything goes well.
As my baby boy is to arrive next week sometime I am not able to buy one this month, therefore I need to wait a little longer.
I had most of the Dualsport 650 models sold in the US but never owned a 650r. Dualsport bikes are the most stunted bikes here and I think the xr650r is the most well rounded bike for stunting here in the Bahamas because it is as fast as hell right out the box and has enough lighting for our local Traffic Dpt.

My only question is where the hell are going to get one for 3k, the Cycle Trader???

You can find a few XR 650 R's in the chicago area that have been barely ridden by fat old guys for cheap. I went and looked at one in Indiana, a 2001 XR650R with 225miles, and the guy was only asking $3800. I didn't end up buying it cause he sold it the day after I saw it.
