(CBS) LOS ANGELES Chris Sullivan, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy and Marine reservist, has been arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter after allegedly killing a friend and fellow Marine reservist after a night of drinking.
Deputy Sullivan, 24, was in the West Valley Detention Center in San Bernardino County, said Upland police Sgt. Alan Ansara. He is accused of accidentally killing Cesar Valdez, 24, outside Sullivan’s parents’ home on Saturday night.
The shooting was reported at 6:40 a.m. yesterday in the 1548 block of North Winston Avenue in Upland, where a banner welcoming Sullivan home was still hanging on his parents' house.
The two had been out all night with Valdez's girlfriend drinking and celebrating Sullivan's return from Iraq before they arrived at his parents' home.
Sullivan took his gun out of the vehicle they had been in and the two started walking toward the house when the gun went off, Ansara said. Valdez was shot in the head.
"At some point they were holding onto each other and the gun ended up in a position where it was pointing toward the victim," Ansara said. "All the evidence indicates there was no anger involved, there was no argument, no fight, nothing like that," Ansara said.
Valdez was taken to San Antonio Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Neighbor Howard Johnson told KCAL 9 that he saw Sullivan wandering around the front yard just after the shooting.
"He was in shock, understandably so," said Sullivan. "He looked like he was in shock, just walking around in a daze."
