Question HELP! 2002 Yamaha 350 Warrior starting problem

Any help wicked appreciated! Borrowed my Buddie's quad and am having a hard time starting it. Got a new battery thinking that was the problem but think it may be the starter as it catches every once in a while and starts and runs fine but now it almost never catches and have to push it to junp start it. Is there anything I can do to check the starter or does it need lubrication somewhere that I don't know about? Anyone else ever have this problem or any idea what I should try?

Too bad too as I've master rockin' 12's forever and ready for the same on my 04 R1. Just need to fix the practice quad now!

Again................ HELP!!!

Re: HELP! 2002 Yamaha 350 Warrior starting problem

when u say its not "catching," is it not turning the starter at all, or is it turning it, but it is not making the engine turn?
if it is not spinning the starter at all, i know the problem. On my buddies, it was oil getting in the starter. At first, it would work every once in a while, then it stopped completely. I pulled it out and tore it apart, cleaned it, reassembled it, and it worked great, once. The o-ring was bad, so oil got right back in it.
Try pulling it apart, see if it is filled with oil. If it is, spray it down with brake-clean, let it dry, and put it back together (after getting a $0.25 o-ring from your local hardware store.) If that does not work, you can buy a rebuild kit for 30 bucks online for them.
Good luck!

SeeMeStealaZ thanks for the info and yes the starter is not turning over at all. It started happening once in a while and got worse and something electronic just clicking. When I do manage to get it to catch (the starter spins) it sounds like it's struggling to turn over, almost like the brand new battery that I have hooked up to my battery charger is dead. Sounds like you may have hit it dude and going to try fixing it this afternoon and play in the snow!

Answer right in my backyard almost. Sweet. Thanks guy!

SeeMeStealaZ You EFFIN ROCK! :YEAH Sure enough, took the starter off and apart and it was covered in oil! Cleaned, new o-ring and the beast started first try!!! Got to play in the snow and now I have to stall a little more telling my buddy I'm still trying to figure it out until this next snow storm coming. Woohoo!
