Question Tank Denting 101?

Anybody got any goods tips for denting in a 900RR tank? I don't want this tank to leak my 750 did after we dented it in. Should I start around the gas cap and work my way out, dent from the outside and work my way to the center, or just bang the **** out of it and don't think about it? What method worked best for you?

i held up my bike, while my buddy (6'5" 280lbs) stood on the tank, a little bounce and it dented right in, smooth it out with a soft blow hammer

When I dented my 900 tank I started with a soft mallet from the outside and worked my way in. no leaks.

Crossed up endos. Will dent in perfectly!!! Just used a rubber mallet to finish it off and make it smooth, do about a dozen crossed up endos and it will mash in great.

No time to do that...got to do it in the morning with a rubber mallet and then taking the plastics & tank to get painted.

Re: Tank Denting 101?

Stand up on the gas tank then drop down onto the tank. That should give the same effect of crossed up endos.

Re: Tank Denting 101?

best way i've saw on those and what i'm doing to mine when i get it:

hit it with a rubber mallat at the front of the gas cap to slightly tilt the gas cap forward. then, once it's started just do highchair stoppies to dent it for your ***.

that way will angle the gas cap so there won't be a lip to stab you in the ***.

Re: Tank Denting 101?

Jimmy take a 10 pound freeweight and place it centered over your cap and bash that with a mallet.... that way it keeps the whole cap flat as it goes in then you can work around it too. I havent had a leak problem when I did mine like that. Hope this helps :YEAH
