Home made cage
I need some help! If anyone has ever built there own cage in here, shout me a holla. I just want to know what material you used, what thickness, and how you went about bending it. I have welding experience, I've just never bent tubing before. My father can also weld, and we have a family friend who own a machine shop. I just don't want to bother the friend if I can do everything in my pops garage. I'm considering using stainless steel round tubing. I've talked to a few people about using stainless and they have told me that it is very hard to bend. Could I manually bend it with a jig or would I need a hydraulic bender? Would solid round aluminium tubing be a better choice? When I say solid I mean a solid peice, not hollow. I know it would be even harder to manipulate the shape's than stainless, but Id rather have some aluminium bending on me from time to time than replace motor mounts all the time. I just want opinions. What material are all the crash cage companies using?
I read another post from a guy saying that he used steel gas piping from lowes or home depot. Would that be strong enough? I pm'ed him but he hasn't replied back yet about his results using that material. I'm weary of using that method. The price sound great, but I don't want that shizzo falling apart on me.
Any info would be tight. Holla Back

i used bicycle pegs, 1" solid round stock and 3/8" X 1" flat stock.
i built it just like the FI cage, but i used two braces going back insted of one.
first one went to the bottom sub frame mount,
second one whent to the swing arm pivot, i put 3/8 all thread through it and bolted both sides togeter.
it worked awesome. i took some HARD spills on it and never hurt anything

If you want a strong cage that takes a beating check out:

My man made his own cage out of 1" steel pipe. It is so strong that it supports itself from the other mounts so the mounting points never break.
