I hate birds....passionatley.

Ok, who here has been driving down the freeway and seen doves etc. swooping down right in front of cars, like their suicidal? Yeah, well tonight on the way to work, I'm riding on the freeway, doing about 80 mph. I had my visor up because it's hot (kinda), but decided to flip it down because I started thinking about a bug in the eye at 80. Well, I flip my visor down, and about 3 seconds later a bird flies into my head. Luckily, it just bounced off the upper side/front of my lid, otherwise it may have really jacked me up. I still have a sore neck about 3 hours later, and my helmet had a big blood splat mark on it. I'm still not sure how I didn't crash, the damn thing scared the hell out of me. Yeah, stupid ass birds.

Re: I hate birds....passionatley.

Try being a pilot, I've seen pictures and seen the results of a few incidences of bird strikes. Best one I've seen was a landing strut on a cessna covered in blood from a canadian goose There's a few sand cranes on our airport that are asking for it, so if I get one of them i'll take some pics

Re: I hate birds....passionatley.

I always rev or gun it at them. I have hit a few thinking they were going to go the opposite way. But for some reaon they don't try to fly higher, they juts fly faster across you. I've had one creme the front end of the bike. He died. I also ran over a huge as rat that was hauling ass across the street and frankly, it was murder she wrote.

I have also come VERY close to getting jacked up by raccoons and armadillos. One armadillo was crossing the street and couldn't decide which way it wanted to go and was scrambling all over the place so I helped him out and kicked the shit out of it and it went flying into the trees to the side. Foot hurt like hell but its better than having my whole body and the bike hurtting b/c of a dumbass creature....

But if you want to hear something weird. Birds are not normally sound responsive like to your bike or what not when you ride by and they are on a branch or whatever oer on the ground. If it is pecking for seeds or whatever then honk, you'll see nothing happens. But Crows are considered (believe it or not) one of the smartest birds (among mnay other animals). It has been documented that crows like pecans but can't get them open. So what all these crows were doing was flying to the top of a stop light and dropping them on the street. When the cars passed and crushed it they'd swoop down and grab the pecan....

Anyways when you see those crows eating the roadkill on the road honk at them. They ALL repond to it. They'll either take off or you'll notice them damn near take off. Everytime. Everytime I see some on my bike I honk and I get a response. Sometimes I'll drive at them and honk to get a laugh.

I forgot an instance when one tried to fly through my dad's front wheel on his honda sabre Needless to say there wasn't much besides a few feathers that came out the other side

Re: I hate birds....passionatley.

My dad was driving through Utah in his work truck late one night when the car in the lane next to him and ahead of him struck a deer. The carcus (sp?) flew under my dads truck and got stuck between the rear dif and the ground for a minute and splattered all the insides up all over the back of the truck. He said it had to be the worst smelll he's ever smelled before. yuck

Yeah, birds suck. I was glad as hell I had put my visor down, if it had hit me in the face....ouch.

Re: I hate birds....passionatley.

Have you ever noticed there's always the one @$$hole who has to "better" everyone's story? This time that @$$hole is ME!

I've been wracked a few times in the head by birds (Thank you, helmet.) I even once helped a bat commit suicide on my fairing. ...and then there was the buzzard.

I was innocently riding to work. The route was a nice mix of two-lane backroads and some four-lane highway. I'm entering a four-lane via a ramp and catch a glimpse of a buzzard in the median.

This particular ramp is semi-blind. It's safe enough to enter if you have a reasonable (40+mph) speed, but the curvature is such that you don't want to be going any slower for fear of being rear ended. About the time I enter the right lane of the highway, I see Mr Buzzard taking off across my path. ...and the cars coming up fast behind me. ...and the 4-5' string of entrails that Mr Buzzard is "dragging" behind him.

Now, I don't know the physics of aviary flight (I must've been asleep in class that day,) so I couldn't tell you what a carcass-laden buzzard's ascent rate should be, but I CAN tell you it wasn't gaining altitude very quickly. The entrails were mere inches off the ground and our paths were about to cross.

My choices (as I saw them at that particular moment) were:
1) Slow down and hope the driver behind me is paying attention to driving and not doing one of the many moronic actions I see every day (reading the paper, shaving, make-up, etc.)
2) Accelerate and hope for the best,
3) Accelerate to the left lane and hope for the best,
4) Head for the shoulder and BRAKE!

Choices 2, 3 and 4 all appeared to have the same ending. ...one hungry buzzard and one NAS-TEEEE motorcyclist. Choice 1 seemed to be my best one at the time, so I started braking. The traffic behind me wasn't slowing. They must not have been able to see the scenario unfolding. ...or they DID see it and were trying to help Mr Buzzard create an entirely new art form. The outcome wasn't in my choice list because I couldn't have controlled that part of the situation.

For whatever reason, Mr Buzzard decided to drop his deer guts. They landed with a royal splat on the centerline of the highway. I accelerated away from traffic and never saw the faces of the drivers behind me. I can still imagine one of 'em muttering, "That would have been HILARIOUS!" The rest of the ride was without incident and the only evidence I found was a small dark spot on the cuff of my pants.

Rather anti-climactic, huh? I prefer it that way.

That incident took place nearly ten years ago and to this day I cringe when I'm riding and see a buzzard along the road.
