Re: how do u erase a hard drive

What operating system are you running right now?

If its XP then load the CD into the cd-rom. Press the button to turn on your PC its should boot from the CD and not the hard drive. (This all depends on your boot sequence) When the CD loads read the directions and press enter to load a new OS. Once it comes down to it it will find your current OS and you want to overwrite this or delete the partition. I would delete it then it will ask you a few few questions about this task and you'll be erasing everything.

This is quite simple if your objective is to erase the data on your drive then this should be a fun experience for you.

If you need me to I can walk you through the process over the phone. Just PM me ur number and I'll buzz ya ...I have unlimited long distance.

Re: how do u erase a hard drive

Dude just hit the start button, click on run. type command or cmd or c/: should work. then type c/:reformate it will tell you do you really etc etc click yes. this should take about 5-10 miuntes dependin on how many files/how big the virus is. Just a note some virus can survie formates and partitions so sometimes you need to get a whole new HD(most dont tho). once this is done have a winds 98hd and 4 wind2k hd one for each start up, once that is done then upgrade to xp if you have xp. thats the savest way and winds 2k should let you know if you still have the virus on the same drive.

Most ppl partition their drives just to make space of old crap they dont want anymore. In a case of a virus you shoudl just reformate the drive and is more reliable to work the first go around. sometimes you need to partition 3 or 4 times before the virus is fully gone. Worms leave dummy files that can surive partitions. Yes reformating deletes everything(includign the virus) which is why you save important on a cd.

you can do it so when you first turn you computer on it says hit like F1 or ESC to enter start opt. then when your in that, change it so it read the disc drive before the hard drive. Then just drop your XP disk in, and restart. This will read the disk first, let you start over. If this dont help you have to go into dos and delete and repartion your drive and its a little harder.

I'm not all that in cpus, but I know I had 3 viruses surive partitions and I dont deal with them anymore. But its safe to upgrade to xp from wind2k. Yes, more time consuming, but it well worth it.

Re: how do u erase a hard drive

How to delete a partition:

Throw HD onto ground from a 5 foot drop!

How to format a Drive:

Pour gasoline on it and light it on fire!

Did I miss something. This is tuff enough trying to explian it to someone over a post. This is why I offered to have him buzz my pager and I will suck up the free long distance from my end to help another rider out.

You guys need to remember there are people who have no clue about PC's....take it easy on these guys...LOL

(I like the gasoline trick myself)

Are you in school for computers? I ask because you said "I'm not a comp tech yet" Its a tuff career to have now a days. I'm self-taught(hacking cracking side), but my pops runs a corp on networking for high profile clients...ie doctors, lawyers, dentist. 600 bucks an hour...lol

Wheres San Pedro? West Coast?
