HDMI cable???

I just picked up an HD camcorder a few weeks ago. It came with a standard USB cable. When I plug the camera in to the computer with the USB cable I can download all of the images and videos to the computer using the Sony Picture Motion Browser software that came with the camera. At that point you can burn the stuff onto dvd or whatever you wanna do but using that program you cant edit stuff. When I tried to use Sony Vegas or Pinnacle Studio to edit the stuff, those programs didnt recognize that I had a camera attached to the computer.

I want to buy an HDMI cable because I think thats what is needed to have the programs recognize the camera. My question is do I have to buy an additional video card that has a port for the HDMI cable or is the HDMI cable just plugged into your regular USB port

Appreciate any help

Re: HDMI cable???

You'll need a video card with HDMI input, if that's even available. What camera do you have and can you just use the sony software to get the raw footage and then load it into the editing program?

I tried that. I have all the footage on my computer and went into both Vegas and Studio and tried to import that footage into those programs and it wasnt recognized either I got the Sony SR12. I'll probably have to call Sony or email them if no one knows on here.

Re: HDMI cable???

Here's the problem. HDMI is a video cable, it's not a data connection like a usb cable. With an HDMI video card, you would need a program to record the video while the camcorder is playing it. There would be no control from the computer. I'm not sure if there are even video cards with HDMI inputs, probably only outputs.

That would make no sense then coz you would lose the quality of the video if you have to capture it while playing. I used to do that on my old vhs camcorder. I would play the video and use the capture button to capture the video while it was playing. Fuck I'll probably just reach out to Sony somehow. There's gotta be something online that shows this shit.

Re: HDMI cable???

NO all that video card does is allow a connection to an HDMI monitor. Figure out how to import the video from the camera in a format that can be edited by different software and edit it. You're doing something wrong.

Yeah I figured I was. In the manual it says does not come w HDMI cable so I thought that maybe an HDMI cable would help in this situation. Eh Ima look at it later. If anyone has this camera or a similar one and can offer any advice, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for your help mayn. Zuki too

Re: HDMI cable???

Eh I probably shoulda done more research before buying. I just read this on another forum

Quote:
It's not impossible to edit AVCHD. I don't think that's what is being said. It's much more difficult than HDV to edit...and HDV is already difficult as it is. I have a Core Duo machine using HDV and it's a pain (when editing M2t files). AVCHD is even worse. So you have to transcode it to a different intermediary in most cases just to edit. That, I understand, takes a long time....my point in another thread is....that the time factor for both HDV and AVCHD kind of evens out. Sure it's random access....as opposed to capturing an hours worth of HDV footage....but when you have to transcode AVCHD to an intermediary, just so you can edit, then where is the gain? it all comes down to the same amount of time.

Edit: This of course is all true if you are using something like Cineform which removes pulldown on the fly.
Now add in the fact that I have no idea what theyre talking about and im fucked right now

firewire connection is what you need. Do you have that on your camera?

+1... you need a firewire cable and software that supports HD. Certain software does not recognize HD formats (although most should convert it).

you do need a firewire cable to capture digitally i think usb will only allow streaming capture in most cases.

HD camcorders in my opinion still aren't very feasible when considering even after you have the hardware to capture in HD format, software to edit in HD format, and get everything finished ready to send out for copies, you have to use either an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc to view the full quality which most people don't have access to nor want to pay for at this point.

Nah it only has a spot for USB and 1 for HDMI cable.

Haha Im not trying to make dvds or anything like that. I read a bunch of reviews that talked about this being a good camera - its got 120gb hard drive and you can also use flash memory cards so I got it. But now I cant figure out how to get the programs to recognize the camera. Eh Im gonna fuck around a little and read and see what happens. I'll let yall know how it works out

Then you'll only be able to use the HDMI for output purposes to an HD-TV. I don't think there are any VID cards that capture in HDMI. (I could be wrong though)

He doesn't need firewire. USB 2.0 is the same shit only faster. I don't think anybody uses firewire anymore.

Did you read that? It was written in 2005, USB 2.0 = 480 Mbps / FW = 400 Mbps, they say fire wire is better for external storage not video. How was I wrong?

(A) 2005 was not long ago and that technology hasn't changed much.

(B) You are right, USB 2.0 is RATED higher, but does not actually transfer speed faster in many cases. And here is the exact excerpt from that article stating how it's better for Video and External HD's:

Firewire is much more prevalent in this category. Almost all modern digital camcorders come with Firewire connectivity. Because of technical differences, Firewire is a better bet for transferring uncompressed (raw) video from digital camcorders, even though USB 2.0 has a higher maximum speed (400Mbps vs. 480Mbps). Not many camcorders have Firewire 800 connectivity yet, but this is expected to change over the next few years.

Most digital cameras still use USB for image transfer. This is likely due to the higher level of compatibility with current computers nearly all have USB ports, while a considerably lesser portion have Firewire ports.

The only reason why it's listed as a tie is b/c USB 2.0 is more commonly used and for most people it will suffice when you want to do basic image transfer.
