Morels and turkeys! Anyone else having any luck?

Here's my Eastern- Rio Grande Hybrid that I got. Season is until the end of May in KS, so I got to make up for missing TWO early on!! You can get up to two toms in Ks.
26lbs 103/4" beard 1" spurs... two year old gobbler

Now here is half of his breast all wrapped in bacon, injected and sitting in brine for like 8 days after I shot him, and then smoked over hickory in my barell smoker for 4 hours! It's actually way bigger than it looks!
Plus some of my Morels that I found.. not many but enough for me and my daughter to batter and fry up, then eat just enough to be full and not get sick... that and I had already split them with a friend! we found like 55 last Sunday. and I've ben finding more like every day I go look almost too! MMMMMM-MMMMM goood shit!!

If you guys have never had any of this then you don't know what you are missing. Alot of people aske me why I hunt... it's for this right here. And all my trophies too!

Re: Morels and turkeys! Anyone else having any luck?

Thanks
Morel Mushrooms? I think some people call them ground steaks. the things in the picture with my hand on the counter. That is not a very big find either...

they only grow for about a couple weeks in the spring, sell for like 60 bucks a pound fresh to chefs, and the commercial industry relies mainly on wild mushroom hunters to keep it goin. If I'm not mistaken they aren't able to grow them or mass produce them at all.

I can't explain them other than battered and fried up and they are so stinkin good! It's better than any mushroom I've ever eaten before... that's why they are so coveted and desired by top chef's!

I just find them when I'm turkey hunting mainly.. I never really go out on purpose just to find them. I need to though! I didn't look around this site much either I just googled it so if anyone wanted to learn more they could...
http://www.thegreatmorel.com/index.shtml

I got to do something more than just stunt...

Sweet! Kayaking sounds fun too! got to have other things besides just wheelies!

I found some today too. All LARGE yellow's. I bet 6 of them weighed a pound! I shouldv'e taken pics before I put them in salt water...

I have a friend that posts on this site that's goin up to Iowa to hunt for some tomorow, and I think they are about to be done here in KS...But I still got enough to cook up another batch and who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Re: Morels and turkeys! Anyone else having any luck?

Yea... I'm not a big shroom hunter, but if that's the case then we should be good to go for a bit here in KS... where are you at?
I'm just not finding as many as I did a couple weeks ago. Grass and stuff is starting to grow up and choke them out I thought?

Thanks for the new vote of confidence though... I"ll keep lookin while I'm fillin my second turkey tag!

Re: Morels and turkeys! Anyone else having any luck?

Yea... I got alot on the property where I hunt opener every year.

check out the youtube video I got of me arrowing that tom last season there are a couple hens there with long beards too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDaRAVObSGM

I have one that has about a 9 1/2 " beard and they say it's like 20% of them have them, just that 6" is super long for one.... I'd be curious as to what the record is.

and that link is your area you say, or youre link?

Re: Morels and turkeys! Anyone else having any luck?

Found about 80 today again.....

EACH! haha there were two of us, and the only problem was that about half of them were old and dried up. that sucked cuz some of the dried up ones were the biggest that Iv'e seen ever in my life!

I think the grass is starting to get too tall and is chokin them out now. We are about done in KS.

And I'm hungry too!

UUGH! I ate way too many mushrooms tonight. ouch! but I actually keep walkin by the plate and snatching up another few every couple of minutes, so I had to put them up in a baggie in the fridge!

Now all that does is slow me down some! dang my belly hurts..haha

Re: Morels and turkeys! Anyone else having any luck?

Nobody is killin any turkeys???? What about all those guys posting up pics of your deer in the deer hunters thread? Are none of you guys are out there killin any gobblers?

Well, ....here's another one from me then I guess. Yesterdays bounty!
One hour in the woods culminated itself into a nice hunt! I took my daughter to school, so I was late walkin in around 9am. Only about 10 min. of actual hunting time though and I was done! Most of my time was spent walkin in and out!
Crow call got them to gobble, and they cut me off every time I scratched my Primos Alumislate friction call. It was just more than that horny bastard could handle!! Actually, there were four strutters but this one was the most dominant out of them all.

4 yr old tom, big spurs, average beard.... 9 15/16" beard, and I didnt' weigh him, as he was light from chasing tail all spring. I didn't measure the spurs either, but I didn't have to, he was a limbhanger and that was obvious!!
(That means that his spurs are so long that he will hang all by himself from them on a tree limb(pictured), for all the non-hunters out there... That is how you age a turkey is spur length, the longer the better, older, wiser, ect..)

Sorry to ugly the pictures up with my face again....
