Digital Still Cameras

I want to get a digital still camera for shooting freestyle riding, etc. I am alittle concerned about how quick they shoot for the action type shots, and how many mega pixels I should be looking for--any help/tips would be appreciated.

Well.. really depends what you're looking to do.. If you just plan on putting the pictures up on the internet go for a 2mp and save yourself some money. If you wanna print anything go for a 3mp. How much money are you looking to spend?? I can answer pretty much any questions you have, so just post 'em here. I've been selling digital cameras for the last 6 years :D

D100 is definetley a sweet camera. If you like that one, also check out the FinePix S2 Pro.. It's also based on the Nikon F100 body and is supposed to be even better than the D100

Take a look at the new Nikon Coolpix 4300. It's a brand new model. It's a 4mp camera and is pretty small. I was going to give you the link to it, but Nikon's web page is down right now. Check out Nikonusa.com later and see if it's working. Take a look at the 4300 and the 4500.

OK, you are looking for a digital camera. I have a Toshiba PDR-M25 , it was rated by consumer reports to be the best, my g-friend picked it up for about 200 clams. Beware, If you are looking for action shots, a digital still camera may not be the way to go, as they are just that: digital STILL cameras. They are great for taking pictures of THINGS THAT DON"T MOVE, ie your bike, house, tree etc. MIne (and I'm not sure how the others on the market are) has an automatic focus, that I cannot disable. In other words, if I go to take a picture of say, someone going by doing a standup, The stupid camera has to focus first, and by that time your subject is long gone. In other words, no "point and click" here. Just something to think about, cuz i sure am pissed about mine. I mean It's a great camera for things that sit still, but how often do we sit still on our bikes:D . Am I right Nags?

You are not

Just press the shutter button down half way first and follow the subject. This will lock the focus and therefore will not have to first focus when you hit it. Follow the subject while the button is pushed halfway down and hit it all the way when you want to take the picture. It will work perfect :D

I am by no means a expert with still cameras but I have played around with a few, what I found was that watching the person in the screen and staying with them until AND after you click the picture button, that way it was in focus and ready to go, maybe you could try that(if you haven't already) to get cleaner shots. I have had great luck with the video captures I usualy do it just takes for ever, you have to capture and resize every pic from the actual video. Its seem like it would be alot earier to just take the pic and load it to my server.

yeah, I have tried the half button push technique before, but I seem to get limited results. Sometimes it works PERFECT, and other times not so well. There has got to be a better way to do it.... Thanks for the input though....

There is no good or bad way to do it... Thats just THE way you do it. Even with 35mm cameras thats how you do it. I shot professionaly for several years and used to teach classes.. Thats just the way you do it.... Called panning :D

I dont think they make the D30 anymore... The D60 and 1D are both awesome cameras. I haven't really got a chance to use them, but everything I've heard about them is pretty good. However, I'm a Nikon fan myself. Have over $15,000 of Nikon equipment :D

I hate Kodak consumer digital cameras. However, that particular model does get better reviews than most of the others Kodak cameras.
