My parents finally just let me go with what I was doing. They decided they'd rather stay a family than split up over, and I quote "a f***ing bike"

Re: parents and bikes...

I made to seem logical to my mom.A bike gets really good gas mileage,The payment is cheap and I dont need mega expensive insurance, and I would be really responsible and not do anything stupid. She bought it untill she saw me wheeling into my nieghborhood. So to keep the bike she made me get a truck.

Re: parents and bikes...

My mom used to ride bikes with my dad back in the day so it wasn't even a ? when i got my first bike. but some of my buddy's used the "gas mileage, payment thing" and there parents came around to the idea. If she doesn't get one anyway...

Re: parents and bikes...

What hit my parents really hard was when a kid I rode with died last summer. I took it very seriously also, but my mom really had a hard time dealing with it just because she cared. Be glad you do have parents that care, because they wouldn't have said anything if they didn't. Since I already had a bike, it was ok, but for you to get one, it's going to take some prevenative measures. If you're responsible about it, they will see the light(IE: buy some good gloves, a jacket, helmet) and show them you're taking the initiative to protect yourself in the worst case scenario.

Re: parents and bikes...

I convinced my mom to let me get one (even though i was still gonna get it if she said no) by telling her i was just going to use it to "ride" back and forth to work and not do anything crazy on, and it was s cheap payment, cheap insurance, and very good gas mileage. I didn't have to convince my dad at all. I just told him "i want a bike" and he said, lets go shopping. 2 weeks later it was sittin in the garage. Now that i show'd my mom a video of a guy doing circle wheelies, and i told her the F4i i bought was so i could do that, she doesn't have a problem with my stuntin... well as long as she doesn't find out, that were doin wheelies down the interstate at 80mph

Re: parents and bikes...

I went threw the same thing with my parents. I just showed up with one and it took a few weeks to work it all out. Now the fun part was when i drove it down to school all minty. Then a few months later i bring it home a differnt color with a cut windscreen, ziptied tail, and dented tank. Try explaining that one.... "why is their grip tape on your tank, YOUR NOT STANDING ON YOUR BIKE ARE YOU" like will smith say's parents just don't understand.

Tell him to start on a junker(Where you think I got my nick-name)..........he's best off doing that anyways. Just be careful not to dump more money into it than what's it's worth. I'm sure you guys have someone that's good enough mechanically to make it run good and keep it that way, if not experiment, best way to learn about mechanics.

Re: parents and bikes...

Well, I got my M-Class when I was 22.
I didn't get my bike till I was 25 (finances).
But what I did was get approved for the loan and all.
Went to my parents house (no I didn't live with em... but I still respected their opinion and didn't want to do this without their knowledge or consent.)
anyway...
I went there with the brochure of the bike. handed it to my dad and said "This is what I am going to pick up tomorrow... Unless you tell me 'no"
Well, he used to ride back in the day (late 60's and 70's).
So I knew he was aware of what I was doing.
I had been looking online, in magazines, and such, so they knew I've had the itch for quite a while.
They said just to use my head and be carefull... it's not ME they are worried about, it's every other idiot on the road... that's why my father quit riding. it became too dangerous.

So, I went back over there to ride with my dad to get the bike (30+ miles on dallas highways isn't a good first experience.) so we went to pick it up and just as we were walking out of the house... literally!
The phone rang.
My older sister.
Our cousin (her sister in law, but still close with the family) had died the night before by high-siding her bike she'd only had for less than 3 weeks.
My father just looked at me and said "you still want to do this"
My reply "If she had drown at the lake, and we were going to go pick up a boat... would you ask me the same question?"
about 3 weeks after I got my bike, I asked my father why he didn't say "no"
his answer "cause I remember how badly I wanted my first bike..."
I've been very carefull and had alot of fun.
learned alot from my fellow riders and have spent alot of time learning and practicing to be as good of a rider as I can be.
Using your head doesn't take a genius... just someone willing to listen and learn.
Ride safe and be smart.
Russ

Umm unless your lying about your age there I think you should be a couple years past listening to what mommy wants and doing what you want. But of course if you are 20 and still living at home you're either in college(which is a good thing) or you're a deadbeat(not so good a thing) then she probably still has some influence on your decisions in life.

You can get hurt getting out of bed in the morning, crossing the street, eating lunch. Point is you gotta live your life before you get to old to. Don't want to be one of those people who looks back and wonders what it would have been like to do the things you wanted to when you were young....
Everything in life can be dangerous, some things just give more of an adreneline rush than others. she'll get over it in time and accept it.
