Re: Fork setups...Enough already!!!

I’m new here and to stunting (squidward)

nice thread, I’ve been chewing through it from the start for maybe a week now. As I read, I would want to respond with an answer or a question that had been prompted by the posts, consistently someone posted my thoughts, so maybe I have a chance with this group.

I was comparing the 929 and F4i forks and found that the small dia. axle side of the 929 is the same dia. as the large dia. axle side of the F4i. What that means is I could put both fork legs on one axle (centerline) for precision length comparison. I measured (tape measure) an approximate 29.625” for the F4i leg from axle center to top side of fork cap. That dimension accurate or not, all my other dimensions are with in say, ten ‘thou of absolute length. I read some “this one’s longer than that” but so far I just found one post with lengths of the two and it sounded like tape measure approximations (which is okay). So I wanted something more exact. All my measurements hereafter are digital caliper drawn (Nags trick). The 929 leg measured 1.600” shorter axle center to top side of fork cap) than the F4i, making the 929 length 28.025”

929 and F4i use the same steering stem nuts (the goofy spanner nuts) I think. When both are tightened on the same frame (F4i) the top side of the top spanner nut should be the same relative location to the frame (i.e. same size top bearings will clamp down to same height). The top spanner nut is the point of origin for the comparisons.

929 and F4i top triples get bolted tight against the top side of the top spanner nut (the “zero” plane).

Length above zero when top of fork mounted flush with top of triple (929) or clip-on (F4i)
929 - 0.118
F4i - 1.835

F4i Axle to top side of fork cap 29.625

929 Axle to top side of fork cap 28.025

F4i fork length below zero (29.625-1.835)=27.790

929 fork length below zero (28.025-0.118)=27.907

929-F4i (27.907-27.790)=0.117

The 929 has 0.117” more fork length below zero (is longer). Combined with the 929 “sprung” for a heavier “racing” bike and newer more advanced, stiffer and not as droopy as the saggy old F4i mediocre street bike for 135-man. Both forks on a given bike I would expect the 929 forks to be noticeably taller in the front.

You guys convinced me to respring my F4i’s, my 1.0 racetech’s arrived today :-D got a lot of work just to get mine running, then the hazing ritual to get the Everett Dawgs ta leme ry wid’em

I have photo's (too wide), I would rework & post or email em if interested

1/8”, I could’ve just said 1/8” taller

just a thought F4i with db bars, drop the forks flush with the triples...yeah that’s taller...can you endo a chopper?

Question: for a given skill level will the bigger bikes roll farther than a 600 (inertia) practical, not theoretical crap.

you can put you clip-ons above the triple without lowering your front end. This makes them higher which makes many tricks and moving around on the bike easier.

06' 600RR
DIMENSIONS

Rake 24.0 degrees
Trail 96.0mm (3.8 inches)
Wheelbase 54.5 inches
Seat Height 31.7 inches

06 F4i
Rake:24.0°
Trail: 96mm (3.8 inches)
Seat Height: 31.9"

03' 954
Rake: 23.45 degrees
Trail: 97 mm (3.8 inches)
Seat height: 32.1"

00' 929
Rake: 23.8 degrees
Trail: 97 mm (3.8 inches)
Seat Height: 32.1"

03 636
Rake: 24.5 deg
Trail: 3.7 in
Seat height: 32.5

05 636
Rake: 25 deg
Trail: 4.2 in
Seat height: 32.3

So the differences are nominal. the lateral flex in an inverted setup is less, but as matt pointed out, that is a mute point unless you are bangin out corners, or perhaps turning stoppies, But I dont do that so I dont know.
I have a tendency to think that there is no differnce between inverted or classic forks, as long as the suspension is set up properly for what you are doing.
Dimensionally alot of the Bikes are very similar. I think that a more interesting thing to look at would be where the center of mass and gravity was located and how Centralized it was on what bikes. I would think this would have a much greater effect on your ability to balance and roll a stoppie.

just flip 'em. only thing you should do is cut the bottom part of the tree that holds the ignition off...

cables and everything are long enough...

btw, you flip them over and put the Right on the left and vice versa
