You were tellin me that to put my pipes on my banshee i should jet it with a 280 jet...i was wondering where i could get these jets, and if certain jets are better than others, cause the only one i know of is dynojet and they sell them in stage kits and i couldn't find the size jets that were available....im sorry i really dont know much about this but im tryin to learn

the dealer by me is really overpriced, so i was hopin to get them off ebay and the only jets ive found on ebay is dynojet. but on the dynojet website they only list these stage kits that dont include the size of the jets it comes with...i really dont know much about this so im tryin to find out like whats good, what should i avoid, lood for....etc.

Hey Man,

The jets shouldn't be very much.

Here's the scoop...You have FMF pipes right?

Stock Banshee Main jet is a 200. The stock Pilot is a 25.

FMF recommends bumping the Main jet to a 260 and upping the Pilot to a 30. They recommend REMOVING THE SNORKEL on the airbox. That allows a lot more air in, but be careful if you trail ride or ride in the water.

Now, if your airbox is completely removed (running filters off the carbs) they say to run a 280-300 Main jet and a 30/32.5 Pilot jet.

If you are running the stock airbox setup the jetting will be different. I would think that a 280 main jet would be way to rich since you aren't getting any more air in. In fact, my Banshee has full FMF's running the stock airbox and I am still running the stock Main Jet. I just had to adjuct the clip on the needle. If I had my quad I could tell you what position its in, but I don't have it at the moment.

You can pick up the jets at your dealer. The main should be around $7 (OEM) and the pilot should be aroun $5 (OEM).

You can buy one of the "Jet Kits" also, but it's gonna cost you more money. They "should" give you jetting instructions for aftermarket pipes with the kit.

ok so lets say i just remove the snorkel. then i should up the main jet to 260 (around $7) and the pilot to 30 (around $5)...thats it, i dont have to adjust the needle?

is changin the jets easy or should i have someone thats done it before to help me with?

Jim,

Changing the jets is a cinch, but making sure it is jetted properly is what is difficult.

Do you know how to take plug readings? After you jet you do a plug reading and that tells you if it is running rich or lean (by the color of the plug). If the plug is a nice chocolate brown (and dry) you are perfect. If it is a whitish color you are lean, and if it is dark, black, or wet you are rich. It is better to be a little rich than lean, but running too rich causes the motor to run hotter and on top of that you lose power (just like if you had a dirty air filter or ran with your choke on).

If I were you I would try the suggested jet settings (260 main and 30 pilot). Take your snorkel off and do a plug reading. If you are running lean just put the snorkel back on and check it again.

Just to let you know, taking the snorkel off is probably the best FREE mod that you can do to the Banshee.

Let me know if you need more info on plug reading....I can tell you the proper way to do it.

thank you for all the information. no i dont know how to take a plug reading, i think i know what your talking about but if you could explain it, id rather be safe than sorry you know.

when you refered to adjusting the clip on the needle if i run a stock airbox, whats the needle, and do i have to adjust it when i change the jets

i called the dealership by my house and they said that they have the jets for like $5 but when i asked him about the pilot he didnt know what i was talkin about, so could you explain to me what that is so when i go to get the jets ill know what to look for, just incase they call it somethin else

Wow, that's pretty bad if a dealership doesn't know what a Pilot jet is...Now I see why you don't want them doing the work :D .

The stock Pilot Jet Yamaha part # is 239-14172-16-00. If you give that to them they'll be able to see what part you are looking for. Or, if you have another dealer, I'd try calling them.

For the plug reading, what you will want to do is start the bike up and let it warm up to operating temps. Do a full throttle run and cut the engine while you have it wide open. Then take the plugs out and look at them.

If they are Chocolate brown to a tanish color you are okay. If they are whitish (and sometimes with deposits on them) you are running lean and you will want to go to a larger main jet (or if you took your snorkel off you can try putting it back on). If the plug is black/wet you are running rich and will have to go down on the main jet (or if you still have the snorkel on, take it off).

As for the needle....If you change the pilot and the main jet you shouldn't have to mess with it. However, just a little bit of info for you. You'll notice the needle jet as soon as you open up the carb. It's a bit long jet that slides up and down the center. It has some notches at the top of it and there is a clip on it. Stock I think it is in the third position (from the top). Anyway, moving the clip higher leans the engine and moving it lower on the needle richens it.

that you so much for the help, i think that should be good for now

im still waiting for my pipes to come, the first thing i buy off ebay and its been such a pain in the ass, figures but oh well....ill probably pick up the jets and pilot this weekend just so i have them and if i get some time ill try to open up my carb to get some kind of visual of what you have been discribing to me

whenever i get my pipes ill let you know how the operation goes
