rims and tires

I just picked up a yz426 and was wondering what the best size rims would be and what a good street tires was?

Re: rims and tires

front most of the time is a 17x3.50 rear can be a number of things, 17x4.25 17x4.50 17x5 and i have even seen as big as 6 inch on the rear of some bikes, most stick with the 4.5 or 5 but depends on what will fit in your swingarm

Re: rims and tires

17x3.5 front...17x4.5 back. 5 is too big and puts too much strain on the motor and trans.

That's 'cos it's a load of bollocks.

A YZ/WR will take up to a 5" rear, but you have to remove the bolts from the chain guide to get the 5" rim into the swing arm.

Most use a 4.25 with a 150 tyre so that it doesn't foul the chain or swingarm without the tyre needing to be trimmed.
Rennsports, and Supercorsas in 150's come up nice and narrow, and give good chain clearance.

The only real benefit you get from a 5" rear is the subsequent profile of most slicks is better for racers. 99% of us will never notice the difference.

It's the racers again. You get a marginally bigger contact patch when cranked over. Bike steers differently too.

Some people like 'em. Others don't.
Never ridden a bike with a 16.5" front so cannot comment personally.

Re: rims and tires

3.5 in the front and 4.25 in the rear is the only way to go. anything wider wont work on the 426

That's a 4.25 in there with a 165 Maxxis rear, which come up narrower than most 150's.

Either get rims spoked onto your stock hubs, or get 400cc sportsbike wheels, and a good friend with a lathe.

(DR-Z400 wheels and brakes are the same, you just need to use a Yamaha rear disc with a suzuki sprocket)

Re: rims and tires

You need a good friend with a lathe.

20mm Front spindle
22mm rear spindle

Most people mod RGV250 or GSXR400 wheels. Changing bearings to suit when necessary.

Probably worth logging onto the Visordown Supermoto forum and PMing Keef, as he's made up a few sets for people. He'll be able to tell you what's involved.
