Diesel fuel takes two fewer processing steps to make. This means that we can refine more fuel at the refinery which will increase our total fuel production with the same crude resources.

It seems that in this country people or things that can produce better results are penalized, while bad ideas like ethanol are supported. I guess diesel needs a good farm lobby.
Now it could be a complete load of bureaucratic bullshit, but, here is the most recent explanation.

Diesel is a byproduct of gasoline and other crude oil based product production.
The production is something like 30/70, (close to those numbers) it varies by the refinery. That ratio in the US was a greater number of barrels produced than need so it was an export and at one point cheaper than standard gas. Europe has been our importer for a long time as their diesel/gas vehicle ratio is much greater. Over the years domestic diesel consumption has grown as well as significantly larger growth worldwide. So its no longer an excess byproduct and now a valuable commodity. Who knows how many facts are behind that, they big oil companies ran an advertisement in... Time magazine I think. Showing where 1 US dollar of gas went. It split it up into refinery cost, locating, shipping, and other standard fees of operation. Basically it showed that they don't really make a profit. But they were making something like 1,200 dollars in profit per second last year. So the time it took you to read this, they've profited 80,400 dollars.

Ya i completly agree its F'n Stupid that its that high of a price, i got a diesel a few years ago just when the price started to go higher than normal fuel.

That new f-150 better get some damn good gas millage if they plan on it selling.

Re: show us your trucks.. plus info on rams?

It's BS! people start wanting more diesel so they just charge more, that's it... we're all getting fucked!

anyhoo, I got the 07 5.7 Hemi and i f-in love it. Get bent over a bit at the gas-pump, but whatever... No lift cuz i don't like fucking with all that and don't need it for the trails i do, and 99% of guys these days are doing these Gucci lifts anyways with big lame chrome wheels and low-profile looking mud tires = not my thing. I just threw on some 33" mudders on el-cheapo black steel rims with 1.5 inch spacers to clear calipers for a decent look and traction anywhere I try to go!

Anyone know if this whole "multi-displacement" cylinder technology does anything (cutting out to 4 cylinders) ... I say

Yeah sounds like they are trying to attribute it to supply & demand. But I find it very hard to believe the demand increased at the astounding rate that would have been necessary to drive the price up like that.

Any ram with a cummins is well worth the money, and as far as the issue with the trans that was resolved in late 01 so anything after that is fine (Unless you are buying something that was completely abused). As far as the f150 with the turd diesel it was pushed back in production and they are setting a release around 2010, so looks like if Dodge sticks to plan there 1500's will hit the market first with the 5.6L Cummins!!!!!!!! GO GO DODGE!! (OK Cummins)

The ford diesel engine is based on the same one used in the european diesel land rover, haven't formed a solid opinion on that yet ....

Re: show us your trucks.. plus info on rams?

If I am going to buy anything that has a diesel I want to have the option of bumping the power up a considerable amount without putting a different motor in it and that is what you will need to do if you buy the ford 1500, but then again I guess thats about right for ford diesels, cause I have seen a few that have Cummins in them already lol!!

Then you get a 2500 or 3500 .... buying a 1500 or suv diesel would probably be because you don't need the power of the 3/4 or bigger vehicles ... and stop being ignorant, its an international not a ford motor .... I'm not sure who produces the land rover diesel - i know it comes out of the UK so we don't need to worry about the crappy quality from our wonderful UAW

Re: show us your trucks.. plus info on rams?

The silverado 1500 diesel will be out around the same time as the dodge.....although it has been an unknown option to even most dealers since at least 2003...and in the avalache.

I could do a regular cab with the little izuzu 4bt turbo...and get 30mpg and still be able to tow....not much of a speedster though.

I bought a 250 because there are no smaller diesel options right now and it gets better mileage than any gasser with the trailer, and better than a lot of 4x4 1500 gassers even unloaded ... so seems quite logical actually. Now when a smaller truck comes out that has the great mileage of diesel and weighs less and is cheaper, that would make more sense as I'm not pulling 20k lbs ....

More reliable, they are probably marketing towards a different crowd. Turbo would definitely give it more power than the SC, but the SC is more reliable.

Re: show us your trucks.. plus info on rams?

Based on las vegas show numbers the 2010 diesel f150 should put out 335 HP with 420 FT-LBs and get 22-24 mpg ..... sounds pretty good to me
