run it up high like a FI bar, not straight out, it makes it alot more stable. Also make sure that the top, back edge on the ground drags more. You don't want the bottom, front edge while scraping, to hit first, it will dig in and not drag very good. It's also best to get your length about where you want itand stand it up on the bar to weld it. Before you weld stick a couple of quarters along the front edge and that will get your angle just right.

I am planning on putting a bar on my bike this winter. I'm thinking of putting some kind of suspension on it so that the bike doesn't hit to hard, while i'm learning 12's. (one of my friends broke his fram while learning 12's because of hiting to hard)

I'm thinking of using mountain bike shocks to obsorb the blow, do you think that this is possible, and/or effective method.

P.S. If anyone has any other good crash protection methods other then the odvious (slider, cages) let me know. I have no money to fix my bike if it breaks and I can't afford insurance so If I wreak it I'm screwed.

hey zx-636, do you have a cage already. im just wondering cause i have been looking for a cage for a while. Tim at freestyle ingenuity emailed me and told me that they should have some for sale in about two/three weeks. so i was just going to go with one of those. but just wondering what you already have for protection.

.
not bashin' ya dude - but learn SMOOTH brake control & you won't have the slightest problem. walk before you can run & u'll never snap a subframe.

Someone people just bash the bar just to say they hit it - its all about finess!

I second that .... I did it the wrong way, I went for the bar everytime, and I scraped nice, but it ended up braking my subframe tabs .... BUT I talked to the right people and they taught me the **** ... the same **** you are reading here. Don't go for the bar .... brake and throttle control sir!!!!

could someone please post a pic of a 12 bar mounted without plastics, perferably on a srad style gixxer, but any will do im just a little confused as to which bar they mount on, the top one going to the back of the seat, or the lower one that goes downward to the engine.

and im pretty much set on making/mounting a 12 bar before i try that far back just in case, i can do some slow **** already, now im ready to take it a little further.

i used 1/4" thick, 1.5" wide flat plate on the side of the frame. it's bolted with 2 bolts on each side, grade 8.

the back part is a 1/2" by 1.5" wide steel flat plate.

don't wory about suspension or wheels or any crap like that. people always try to tell me how to improve my bar when they see it, of course people that have never 12'd before. it works great just like that, normal bar. learn brake control before scraping and you'll be fine.

and ya, put it up on the bar before you weld it. also, make sure the bike is full 12 or maybe a little past or it'll be unstable when you drag.

not a great example, but i don't have any w/ my tail off.. only this one i took the day i built the bar.. and it's an R1 anyway heh. But, you can see the bar extends in a good 10-15" onto the subframe, bolted in as many points possible. if you can, bolt it to both parts of the subframe so it will flex less (but your subframe may flex more.. so i guess it's a tradeoff). this was the first bar i built, but worked well enough. you can see bolts i welded onto it to secure it through the "trunk" part of the subframe too.. so there would be less leverage for the bar to tweak the subframe.

That helps a little bit, but i thought you shouldnt drill through the current subframe bar, i thought you were supposed to use c-clamps to secure it.

nah, just drill right through the subframe. it'll be fine.

also, another thing, they say to make it go up, but i made mine so that it's just shorter (from the ground up) than the seat. Like, if you looked at the bike from the side the rear seat will be taller than the bar by a little bit, that way if you flip an endo most of the seat will hit you before the bar does, so not all that weight is just on the bar when it digs into your back.

just another safety tip.

is that short enough? usually you have to cut the tail down to make a gixxer sit at full 12....
