I think I'm gonna buy a 600, a throw down bike... so I won't be upset
when I drop it... I GOTTA learn circles... looks too damn fun not to do.

What's a good bike for that... needs FI... and I want to make sure I
can get a 12 bar and a cage...

I gotta admit, I don't know anything about 600s....

cranking powpows without using rear brake control to do real 12's back in the stonage isnt stunting!!!!
sorry not trying to hate,but i did backroad and lot wheelies on my old 1980 kawasaki 1000 ltd back then as well and for miles,and i dont concider it stunting!!!

as someone that was there then, and also one of the first pro stunters in the country i gotta call that one out!

i respect you did wheelies for fun in lots back in the day as did alot of people,i bet some harley freaks in the 50's did em to.
lets not compare the two.



ya doug killed it back then as did evil and some others,but as much as itkills me to say it, colbert was frist to stunt big bikes as a real pro after seeing garyrothwell first here!!!!!
rothwell was not from the us so colbert gets that honor in my opinion!!
and whoever it was that said starboyz,should be slaped!
i stunted pro before them! lol
they were first to have a vid in the us market,thats it!!!!!!!!
all there tricks were done before them.

1st of all, OF COURSE I used a rear brake to control my wheelies...
duh... second, I had a mechanical link from my passenger peg to my
rear brake... so was it high tech like now, running two masters... NO.
But there was more than one time I came to a stop using my rear brake
and at the last minute, I'd bring the front end down. I didn't have a
12 bar on the rear, but I'd have the bike negative enough to slow down
from a wheelie... that's not stunting... BULL.

You think riding a wheelie down an interstate for miles wasn't stunting...???
Hmmmmmmm.... the cops sure didn't like it... we had to run all the time.
But when you have a parade of cars following you for miles on end, cheering
and pulling alongside, clapping and hanging out of their windows going
nuts... well, call it what you want, but it sure as hell was a show.

As for doing stuff in parking lots... of course we did, until the cops
came... burnouts, slides, short wheelies... we did all that stuff in the
early 70s'... We didn't sell tickets, so that's not stunting???? Whatever.

And not to diss anyone else... but I never saw ANY Harley's riding mile
long wheelies... I never saw a harley even do a 10 footer... not that
couldn't... I just never saw one.

So for you guys that think you invented some sort of sport, sorry, I don't
agree... You might have been clever enough to figure out how to make
money doing it... but there were lots of guys puttin on a show somewhere
all over the US... for free.

To me, stunting is doing some move that few others can do... and 35 years
ago when I was cranking mile long wheelies on my Kawasaki 900 Z-1,
NOBODY in my city could do that... I was like a hero or something.... hahahha
guys would ask how I do it etc... and want me to teach them... but after
a few attempts, they'd drop their bikes and cause massive damage, and
their "stunting" days were over.

I will also say I'm white, but there was a group of black guys, and this was
'73-75... that did some wild stuff... they couldn't do mile long wheelies, but
there was one black guy that would ride his Z-1 sitting backwards on it...
down the interstate... and they did other crazy ****... like trade bikes going
down the interstate, and one guy would sit up on the gas tank poppping short wheelies...
Again, this was back in '73-75... I'm sorry, but that was stunting...

I could care less whether you or someone else says what I was doing was
technically stunting... all I know is I was doing it... and having a blast.
And that's nothing but good memories to me...

PS, so you were a pro on a 1980 bike??? Maybe we didn't get paid, but we were
doing this **** 7 years before you ever thought about it!!!

I'm not trying to start a fight... I'm too old for that crap... but don't be so arrogant.
Lots of guys were stunting long ago... I don't think ANYONE can say they were the 1st.
Maybe 1st to get paid and make a living... certainly not first to stunt.

OG Superman, maybe you should hop on the YouTube and search for some old stuntwars footage. I mean seriously, Black Sheep Squadron is like 5 years old and 90% of the tricks in there most of us can do. This sport has come a long way.

i almost hate to say it but evel knievel was doing seat standers and flamingo's in the 60's before he would jump some thing ....technically the first u.s professional stuntrider but as far as doing some thing like we do now i still say the wheelie king doug domokus was the first real stuntrider , i mean what ever he was riding at the time he was doing circles and slow controlled wheelies , foot in the bar one handers , **** alot of people are still working there asses off just to do the things he was doing in the 70's ...

ogsuperman im not dissing you or todd colbert but lets be honest the wheelie king was making his living doing wheelies at a level that allowed him to never need to do any thing but wheelie his bike for the rest of his life ....

 

As much as I can't stand EV KN... that's prolly true... funny I didn't
even think of him... because he mostly did short wheelies and then
of course his jumps.

He sure made a living doin it... but I think people came to see him jump
and possibly die... not for his tricks that required a lot of control.

His son is a much better rider than he ever was...

alot of people say that but it is usually people that haven't seen him ride he was pretty good actually and could wheelie till he ran out of gas standing on the seat and also did what some people today would call achro's

going on for me with his pretty capes and sparkly outfits...
But if he did some stunts ADD him to the list along with lots of other guys.

Like I said, the only claim to fame I want is doing long stand ups when
NOBODY else was doing them...

This was a good read... you guys should have taken more pics of the **** you did. Sounds like good times. I would have loved to rock freeway wheelies back then on those CBX's. And if you don't want to have a kid from scratch you should adopt one. You gotta pass on the skills / knowledge to someone to carry on the dirty work
