Splitting Lanes @ high speeds....???

In California, its legal to split lanes. But, is it legal to split lanes at regular freeway speeds? Just say "65mph" cause thats the legal speed limit. I got taken out today by a cop for splitting lanes at highway speeds. He ran into my bike a couple times, knocked it over once i pulled over, grab my keys as if i was going to run, threw my brand new $600 helmet( 2 week old arai) and scrapped it all up after it hit the concrete. He said he was gonna take me to jail, but ended up not doing so after treating me like a pure criminal. I was on my way to effin summer school to finish my college degree and this is how I get treated. I was not stuntin, just splittin lanes, and officer dickweed tries to get me for wreckless driving....wtf? is that legal? He just scraped all my nice shit up....FTP

Re: Splitting Lanes @ high speeds....???

You can only split lanes at 30mph or less...it may be less than that. And I believe you can only do it in traffic. Go to the DMV website, it will tell you there.

I was aware that it was only legal if its 'safe to do so' as in traffic is stopped dead and youre going slow as fuck.

"Can motorcycle riders "split" lanes and ride between other vehicles?
Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner."
Straight off the CHP website.

As far as I know they don't have the laws stating that "sharing" has to be done under any certain mph anymore (giving the cops more power to determine what's safe). The only think you probably did illegally was speed / unsafe lane changes. You change lanes too many times, and that's "reckless." As for how you were treated, that's fucked man... I would definetly get an attorney. Even if you were going 100 that was still excessive behavior on the cops part... especially if you started to pull over right when he first put his sirens on... though I don't get why he would bump you two times if you were actually pulling over right away...

Re: Splitting Lanes @ high speeds....???

Yep......15mph.....MAX. The only reason bikes are allowed to split lanes is because back before air-cooled bikes, all the Harleys would overheat sitting in traffic....thus...they made lane splitting legal, but it can only be done in between lanes.....not on either shoulder, and only under 15mph. There's no excuse for chucking your lid......stick it to that fucker.

Sorry, bro. From what you've told us.....you're screwed for everything EXCEPT your helmet. You were splitting lanes 50mph faster than you were suppose to, which could definetly be cited as reckless. It's good to fight all tickets, chances are you'll get it reduced. If the officer chased you at ALL, then the collisions will be justified by the court. Good luck, bro. If nothing else, plea for a reduction to Exhibition of Speed(racing)......that's what I did. It carries the same jail time and fines, but is a much less serious offense. Reckless starts a criminal record(if you don't already have one). Like I said......GOOD LUCK!!!
