Replacing Clutch (2000 F4) - General Sportbike Discussion

My bike will need a new clutch and I called a shop to ask how much a clutch is and they said it depends what's wrong. They said if the "fibers" are bad then it costs $80-100 but if the plates are bad then that will be another $100.

I thought the clutch was a seires of plates? As you can tell I am not familiar with a bike clutch, so can anyone tell me what exactly is involved when replacing the clutch?

PS I plan on doing it myself.

the clutch is made up of fiber plates and metal plates. They are in a fiber-steel-fiber-steel..etc order. the # of steel and fiber plates vary from bike to bike. fibers and steels are about 7-10 bucks each.
-Remove the clutch cover
-remove the 4 or 5 bolts around the basket with the springs on them.
-remove pressure plate(I think thats what its called)
*check to see if the first fiber plate is staggerd compared to the rest of the plates..it will be noticeable*
-all your plates will come out then
pull out and stack in order as some may be different sizes. If there are different ones it will be the 1st and the last.
soak the fiber plates for about 1-11/2 hours in oil before installing
-put plates back in
-install press plate,springs,bolts
-new gasket if it has 1
-look at the clutch arm in the cover..it has to be in a certain position to go back on.
-adj clutch ond go.
Id put new steels in too.

very good install guide

i did not replce my metals when i changed mine
and never had a problem.. if they are not heated meaning they do not have colored hot spots on them they will be fine.

you can spread sand paper out on a LEVEL SURFACE and scuff them a little before you put them back in.
